Help

Two years ago this month we has a massive ice storm in the Ozarks and the weather man says it going to happen again. I hope he is wrong, we will see.

Do you ever think you have lost your mind? my printer quit me the other day and I spent hours looking for the disk. I looked high, I looked low for about 6 hours. I found everything except the disk. Tonight I opened one of the doors on my compute stand and there was my disk laying in plain sight. I think I have gone around the bend.

Helen wanted me to ask Fleta to come up and try to help me but I would not ask her because I didn't want to tell her I had lost the disk. I have found the disk so Fleta when you have the time come up and help me if you will.

New book by Patricia Cornwall

I went to the libary the other day and saw that patricia cornwall has a new book the title is Port Mortuary (Kay Scarpetta Series #18) . I have read the Kay Scatepetta series since they first started flowing from the pen of Cornwall with much enjoyment and when I saw this new one I checked it out with glee and went home antisempating a few hours of enjoyment.
Critic Jem Bloomfeld said it best....Whatever her faults, you can’t criticise Patricia Cornwell for sticking in a rut. Port Mortuary, her latest novel about the forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta, uses a new narrative device to explore fresh plot territory. But the resulting book is exceptionally difficult to like.
I agree with Bloomfeld I found this new book the most usless piece of work I have ever read by Cornwall. To me it was like wadeing through a field of mud mired up to my knees.
I did finish the book but I employed my sister's method of reading in the last quarter of the work I skimmed the pages a second at a glance and never missed anything except a lot of useless words. When finished I was relieved to to be rid of the whole thing. The first half I keep waiting for the show to start but sadley it just keep being a mud wallow to the finish.

Wayne Darbys life

In the obit of Wayne Darby it was stated that he made the best out of the hand that was dealt him. This was not idle talk, I went to school with Wayne at Denver and he was afflicted in his mental ability some what. I don't know what the term might have been for his aliment but he had learning problems and like the families did in my youth the family gathered around him, protecting him and giving him all of the best that they were able to provide.

Wayne worked on a job most of his life. The jobs he was able to get were low paying jobs. I know he worked in a cafe at Hollister Mo. washing dishes. he had some sort of room at the establishment and apparently was a valuable employee at lest he was faithful. I know he worked there for several years.

I saw him in Bobs market a few years back and he was wearing hearing aids. I wondered if perhaps his problem was that he was deaf and no one realized that was his problem.

What ever his problem he never brothered any one and worked and made his own way in this word. as for Betty's question yes, he was the brother of the Darby girl's father.
No doubt a family member wrote the line he did the best he could with the hand he was delt and I wondered who wrote it and when I saw Eva Bells name I thought perhaps she wrote the line. Eva bell is wayne's father sister.

echos from the past

In the school year of 1953/54 I attended a Bible school out side Ozark Arkansas on top of a mountain over looking the Arkansas river. I had many good friends there not the least of was Betty and Bill Burbank. Betty's home was alts Arkansas and Bill's was Peoria Illinois.
Over the years I had wondered about these two people since we were are getting up there in age I even wondered if they were still among the living.
my questions were answered when I was able to find their names on a site that I used at times.
I called and got Betty on the phone and was able too learn some bits about their
life over the last 50 some odd years. This is a snap shot Betty sent me today , The years have been kind to them or this photo maybe several years old. either way I was was glad to get the photo.
Betty said it wasn't a resonate photo and I believe it maybe a few years past.Either way I was glad to get the picture.

reasons

January 26, 2011By Cliff Erwin, KY3 News cerwin@ky3.com

Marshall, Ar - The mayor of a small Arkansas town is explaining his decision to fly the Confederate battle flag on a day honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

Marshall Mayor, Jim Smithson, decided to fly the Stars and Bars above city hall from Friday the 14th of January through Tuesday the 18th of January in honor of Robert E. Lee's birthday.

The action upset some in town and Monday, three members of the city council called an

emergency meeting where they voted to ban the flying of unapproved flags on city property.

The reason was a racial slur and everone realized it at the time.

don't ear the daiseys

Betty has 3 deer, Fleta has a herd of deer and here is my dear deer.

Sammy's roosters

I think Sammy may have another rooster, the black chicken at the top looks like a rooster to me. I am sure the barred chicken in the 2ND. photo is a hen and one other.of the 5 that is the only two I am sure about . I think the black chicken on the right with feather on her legs might be a pullet but she or he is the youngest so might be a rooster also.
His white chickens are looking better all the time. The combs are noticeable more red and they should start laying next month I think. I am going to have him take them back to market when they start laying. I think he will get a good price for them and they eat like hogs so I don't want to keep them.

set with me under the apple tree!

WASHINGTON — Civility or just silly, the push to mix Republicans and Democrats through the audience of President Barack Obama's televised State of the Union address spread across Capitol Hill on Monday, fueled by signals that Americans want to see more cooperation among the nation's leaders.
This is the silliest thing they have pulled yet.
I think we have a group of school children trying to run this country.
I think someone better set by Joe Wilson and place both hands over his mouth.
The truth be told I think they get along fine with each other of the opposite party. They just want us to think they don't so we will think they are about something besides getting drunk, chasing sex and making money. I was going to say chasing the opposite sex but we know some of these people swing both ways.
Washington D C is a big joke any more any it is not a laughing matter!
I did laugh when I saw that the wet back Rahm Emanuel will not be allowed on the ballot in Chicago for mayor. I saw he had raised a boat load of money and now they wont let him run. My question is will he be allowed to keep the money? If he can maybe that was the plan. If he can't keep the gold maybe he will give it to Hillary to settle her debts after all Bill Clinton went to try to help him get the job.

our mother

Today is mama's birth day . she was born January 24,1921. Last year I said she was born on the 21. You see I remembered the year but mistakenly thought the year was her birthday. I was careful not to make that mistake again.
She bore 8 children and never had a ambition to do anything except to please our daddy and to care for us.
I have heard it said many time about someone who died ,she was devoted to her family but I have never know anyone except Mama who had such devotion to home and hearth.
Daddy loved us but he did have other interest out side the home but mama never did.

Keith Olbermann and mud

Keith Olbermann is out of a job. I thought when president Bush went to Texas who is Olbermann going to rant about now. His show was 99% giving George hell.not that I cared for Bush but if you have a program based on giving the President hell and he goes out of office where do you go?
I clicked over once in while to see what he was doing and most of the time he was ranting about Bill O'Relly over on fox, now Bill leaves a lot to be desired but you can't make a career on giving him a hard time. I will not miss Olbermann but they replaced him with Ed Schultz, are they crazy.
I went to feed and tossed some hay for the chickens to play with since the snow is gone and now we have mud.

Miscreants and his Oklahoma Grandma

I am reading the http://midtownmiscreant.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html blog that Helen said she would not read. He said on his blog I can copy bits of it if I link back to him. so here goes for Helen. He doesn't say how much is a bit so I may get 2 bits...My grandmother smoked Carlton cigs. She claimed her doctor told her to take up smoking for her nerves. Grandfather, Delbert, quit smoking years before she took it up so out of respect Clara did not smoke in the house. She smoked in her chicken coop. The ground was littered with butts. She also carried on complete one sided conversations with her chickens, she had names for everyone of them and there were at least 20. Clara also did not drive. Apparently she drove for a short period of time, but was always running into things, usually stationary and thankfully at low speeds. My mother and her siblings refused to get in the car with her and gramps eventually took her keys. Well Clara still needed to get to the hairdresser, church and Pratts Redbud Grocery store so gramps got her a riding lawn mower with a little trailer and that was her main mode of transport weather permitting.

It seems Clara was riding her mower to town, and was rubber necking the Mayors wife’s flower bed.
Clara ass ended the Mayors parked Caddy,

Delbert drove Clara to town from then on. Everyone thought that was the thing to do. I thought it was a little sad in the same vein of sadness that comes to an old person when they can no longer do some of the things that brought them joy. Simple pleasures. In Clara’s case it was the independence of riding that mower. When I asked her about the accident her answer was classic Clara Mae Mader. She told me that she had been busy gloating over the fact that her flower bed put the Mayors wife’s flower bed to shame, and God in his infinite wisdom had caused her to crash for being prideful.
NOW HELEN THINKS THIS FELLOW IS A FAKE, IF HE IS HE UNDERSTANDS OLD PEOPLE AND I AM ENJOYING HIS BLOG AND HELEN IS MISSING A LOT OF FUN AND A FEW DIRTY WORDS.

chickens and Helen's reading

Sammy bought these chickens a week ago today and they all are well so I guess they are going to live. Sammy said he would carry the water to the big white chickens no water yet carried by SAM so they are my birds. I have to carry water to them 3 times a day. Sammy is a fair weather farmer. he bought some 2 week old pullets one time. It was while he was living at Kelly's. I would love to have had them but no he put them in a box in his room under a light and 2 weeks later he took them out and turned them into the chicken pen Kelly had big hens in. 1 week later he didn't have a bird left.
Chickens have to have feed and water or they will die and young chicks need heat or a mother to cover them. Sammy is a fair weather farmer.
Helen didn't like the blog I said to read she thinks he is a fake or something. She said she had known lots of people in AA and he wasn't one of them. He didn't say he was in AA. he said he went to 1 AA meeting and didn't go back. Helen reads like Betty. They SKIM and don't retain what they read.
I enjoy reading and I retain what I read or I did before I got old . I notice now that I sometime start to read a book and get several pages into it before I think oh, I have read this before. Before I grew old and silly I would have know after the first 10 words if I had read that book before.
It is suppose to get to 40 today, watch out I made go out side and set in the sun for a while.

beware of the rooster

The daily mail reports there is a rooster on the loose in the British isles and he is dangerous. He is a fighting rooster equipped with sharp razor blades attached to his feet.
His owner keep pushing him back in the ring with out the customary hour rest. Mr. rooster turned and attacked his owner cutting his throat.
Officers want to find the bird to strip it of the razor blades it killed with on Thursday.
But they believe their chances are slim. They think the rooster – which has won four fights – is being kept by a rival trainer keen to put it back in the ring.

This is a revolting development

Fleta said she hit a cow long ago going to work, now she never told me she had done that. I am sure she will say I forgot but truth be told she didn't tell me at the time.
Betty is posting dirty pictures of deer copulating on her blog.
Helen's grandson is going to take karate lessons. I am sure we will hear soon that Helen has been beat up by an unknown assailant.
We still have snow.

Today he has posted about the golden voice skid row bum that has been all the rage of late and his view was just about what I was thinking about Mr. Ted Williams.click my title and go read his post,Fast Eddie friday.
This is just a paragraph from his post....In a few minutes we will move on from the Williams saga if we haven't already. We will forget all about him until he pops up on TMZ or turns up in an E R after trying to cheek a hot crack pipe because the "Tree People" were after him. Next week we will become enamored with a milk cow that has Jesus face on it's ass, or some crazy character that goes viral on Youtube. Then we will fall in love all over again.... go by and read the post you will be glad you did.

snow cover and cold

14 degrees here and I have made it out to the chickens taking them hot water to pour on the ice in their drinking containers. They were all alive even if the feet were cold.
Not much to report because the day went by yesterday under a snow cover. My old neighbor came over and shoveled me a path to the chicken pens and a path to Janet's car. Sammy went out on the porch and yelled and yelled at him trying give him a dozen eggs but he was on his way home and not wearing his hearing aid.
We looked out a little time later and he was out cleaning Janet's truck off and was wearing his hearing aid. Janet went and yelled here is some eggs and he heard her. I told Sam probably his wife heard you calling and when he got home told him get back over there and they will give you eggs!

wild food, greens

During the first warm days of very early spring, before canning became widespread in the Ozarks, people anxiously combed the fields and streams looking for the first signs of wild greens. After a long winter of their monotonous diet of salt pork, stored potatoes and corn bread, they were very hungry for something fresh. Long before garden lettuce and onions were ready, cow parsley and poke gave a delicious and nutritious change in their menu, as well as serving as a sort of internal spring cleaning agent whether used cooked or in fresh salads.
Watercress, a member of the mustard family, is one of the most familiar river greens. Many a weary hiker, coming upon a clear running spring filled with tangy watercress, has plucked a handful of the tender leaves to make a tasty sandwich. The growing season for watercress usually lasts from May to October, but if warm weather prevails, it may begin to come in as early as February. Watercress ranges from four to eight inches in height, and grows in mats on the top of the water, its roots reaching down through the water. Besides its snappy flavor which tastes somewhat like a radish, the watercress also contains many important vitamins. In picking this plant take only the leaf and tender stems. Never pull up the whole plant because this can destroy the root system. Mid-spring is the best time to pick this green when its flavor is at its peak. Caution should be taken to pick only the watercress that is growing in a continuously running stream where there is no danger of pollution. Watercress is identified by its smooth shiny leaves, long slender stems and small white flowers. If carefully transplanted in dirt and watered frequently, watercress can be grown as a winter crop, assuring crispness for salads all year long.
Found in early February if the weather is warm is cow parsley. Cow parsley is a long lobed plant looking like a close relative of the watercress. It can be picked until the first of May or until the stalk becomes milky looking. The stems and leaves are good greens and can be picked until they begin to become coarse. Cow parsley is usually found near the river in in marshy locations.
The dock family is one of the most popular families of greens in the Ozarks. Narrow leaf dock (curly dock) and broad-leaf dock (sour dock) are two favorites. Dock can be found not only on riverbanks, but some of the best bunches are found in ash piles, along roadsides and in other waste places. To be at their tenderest the young leaves should be used when they are a foot or less in length. Tender dock tips are tasty boiled and served like spinach. In fact, many Ozarkers prefer dock to spinach because of its superior taste and greater vitamin content. Sour dock adds a lot of flavor to a mess of mixed greens. Curly dock can be found blooming from June to August. The plant grows almost anywhere and ranges from one to four feet tall. The leaves have curly, crinkly edges. Dock was one of the many native plants used for medicinal purposes. Cleaning the liver was its main value.

Another quite popular and bountiful green is the wild mustard. The large, thick and toothed leaves are a deep green in shade. The greens may be harvested when tender. If the leaves are not harvested, the plant stalk becomes strong and unfit to eat. The flowers are bright yellow and grow in clusters. This plant springs up anywhere and grows from spring to late summer.
One of the most frequently found greens in the garden is lamb's quarter which appears about when your garden does but has more food value than garden lettuce. All of the tender plant is used for greens. Nicknames for this plant include pigweed and goosefoot.
When it comes to trying to pick the most widely known and picked green, it seems poke is the unanimous winner.

snow,snow and snow

I made it out to feed and water. The birds are eating at my bird feeder. It is still snowing. The snow is light and fluffy. If I was young I would make a snow man out of this snow.

snow, snow

I opened the door and took a photo of Sammy's chickens with Fleta good camera and could see that they still had some water. They drink more water than you would believe, any way I knew all the chickens has food because I filled the green feeders up yesterday and so I decided I could wait a while to go out. I was delighted to see a red bird on my home made feeder I made with a plastic jug and a big spoon and tape.

snow

We are going to get the big one I think. Winnie Jo doesn't have any thing on us. I wonder if Betty has snow yet?
See the handles leaning against the Barbecue? that is our shovel and hoe. we are ready.

I have not gone to feed yet. I have to get my courage up.
The temperature is 31 degrees. just right for a big snow fall.
Fleta had better stayed home but she probably didn't .I am going to try to get Janet to call in say can't come car in yard wont move.
Tony 's boss has a beef butchered every year for him and he brought me his last arm load of beef from last year. We will certainly be grateful for the good roast and steak during this mess.
My good nurse came by yesterday and dropped off my supplies a day early. Nancy is a very good person.

mad stone

MAD STONE
TRUTH OR MYTH

by Dena Myers

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Holding the oval stone in the palm of her hand, Mary Kay Oberlin said, "I don't know anything more about the history of my madstone except that it was passed down from my great-grandmother. My mother remembered as a child knowing a man who rode a steer instead of a horse to the local country store. A rabid dog bit the steer, and the man decided his steer was rabid because the place on his arm where the steer got the saliva on him swelled up. My grandmother boiled her madstone in milk and applied it to the man's wound. My mother didn't remember if the man recovered, but some people thought the madstone was a cure for rabies."

According to some stories Doug Mahnkey has heard, people have recovered after using a madstone. Sam Massey, a Taney County resident, told him one such story from first hand experience.

One summer day many years ago in Oklahoma, his brother Monroe came in from plowing the fields to eat lunch. He fed the team and then went to eat his own lunch. After he finished, Monroe started back to the barn to get the horses ready. They were gentle, but as he started to catch one of the horses, it seized his arm and shook him violently, making a terrible wound. It was discovered the horse had rabies. The father took him to Stonewall in Pontotoc County to a man who had three madstones. The man applied the stones to the boy's wound, and one of the stones stuck to the boy for seventy-two hours. Monroe fully recovered.

In the isolated Ozark hills far from doctors and hospitals, death from a rabid animal bite used to be fatal. Doug remembered, "When we were children, the talk of a mad dog in the country really put the fear in all of us. We didn't know what to do if someone was bitten by a mad dog. Our parents warned us to be careful about any strange dog, or even if our own dog was acting strange, as there was no cure for rabies."

Even people who had no faith in the effectiveness of the stone had no other recourse but to try the stone if there was one available.

Webster's Third New International dictionary defines a madstone as "a stony concretion (as a hair ball taken from the stomach of a deer) supposed to counteract poisonous effects of the bite of an animal (affected by rabies)." Doug Mahnkey found an older dictionary stating that the most famous madstone in the united States was owned by the descendants of the Fred family in Virginia. Their stone was brought over from Scotland in 1776 and is said to be spoken of by Sir Walter Scott in his novel, The Talisman. It is said that of one hundred and thirty cases in which the stone has been used, none ever suffered from hydrophobia.

The common belief is that the stone comes from the stomach of a white deer. Doug Mahnkey has his own theory of how the madstone develops. "The deer in the wild lick the rock glade and there's a little salt in it. Then they lick their bodies, and that hair causes the stone to form in the deer's stomach. Now that's just a superstition on my part."

Although each madstone probably has a different appearance, Mary Oberlin's stone fits easily in the palm of her hand being about three inches by two inches. It is smooth and rounded but porous, causing it to feel light in relation to its size. It is brown with lighter flecks.

People using the madstone for treatment boil the stone in sweet milk, or sometimes alcohol. While still hot, they apply the madstone to the wound. If the victim has rabies, the stone will stick to the wound and draw out the poison. Once the stone adheres to the wound, it cannot be pulled off. After the stone is filled with the poison, it drops off by itself. It is then boiled again in the milk which turns green the second time. The process of boiling and applying is repeated until the stone no longer sticks to the wound.

Some Ozarkians say they would rather use the madstone than take the shots. Old timers relate the belief that even if one took the injected shots given today for rabies and was cured, when the last illness came to the person, regardless of how long it had been since cured from rabies, the person would die with the fits of hydrophobia. According to another tradition about the madstone, the owner must never sell it or ever make charges for its use.

[70]

Doug Mahnkey has found other people who have witnessed cures or have been treated by a madstone. One of these stones is the York stone. The history of this stone begins with Robert York who took a homestead north of Kissee Mills, Missouri, in the year 1900. While out hunting in York Hollow on his land, he killed a white deer, and in dressing the deer, he found a strange stone in its stomach. This stone has been handed down in his family. A little while before he died, York sawed the stone in half, giving a portion to each of his sons, one of whom was a stepson, Charlie Barnett. Charlie Barnett's portion of the madstone is now in the home of his daughter. This stone was known as the Charlie Barnett stone or the York stone.

Alga Reese of Taneyville, Missouri, was treated with this stone. About 1920, Mr. Reese was helping a neighbor with a sick cow which was foaming at the mouth. In the struggle with the animal, Alga received a severe laceration on his leg. The cow was later found to have hydrophobia and died. Because Alga's wound began to fester, he went for treatment to Charlie Barnett. Alga said the madstone was boiled in sweet milk and applied to the wound. On the first application the stone stuck for sixteen hours and the second time for four hours. The swelling began to go down, and Alga completely recovered with no further trouble.

It is said that Mr. Barnett was offered several hundred dollars for this stone, but he followed tradition and never sold the madstone.

Another story that offers proof of the madstone is the J.M. "Mitch" Thomas family of Kissee Mills. When Mitch was a young man of about sixteen, he was bitten severely on the wrist by the family dog. The dog had been acting strangely and his parents were fearful that the dog had rabies. They sent Mitch on horseback to the home of Lonnie Ellison who had a madstone. Mr. Ellison seemed in no hurry to get around to treating the boy. He boiled the stone in sweet milk and applied it to the wound, but the stone did not stick.

Mr. Ellison decided to test the stone. He went outside and brought a live bee from his bee hives into his house. He then placed the bee on the opposite wrist and allowed the bee to sting Mitch. After waiting until the sting became red and swollen, he boiled the madstone in sweet milk and applied it to the bee sting. It stuck to the spot and drew out the poison. Mr. Eltison said, "Now, young fellow, the dog that bit you weren't mad. You just go home and don't worry."

Mitch's parents weren't quite satisfied by this. When they heard of Granny Nave on White River, who was said to have miraculous powers with her madstone, they sent Mitch to the Nave home. Granny Nave boiled the stone in alcohol and placed it on the wound, but it did not stick. When she tried the method again and the stone still did not stick, she, like Mr. Ellison, told Mitch to go home for the dog that bit him wasn't mad. These old-timers were correct. Except for a scar on his wrist, Mitch was not harmed by the bite.

"I checked on this Nave madstone," said Doug. "Dora Nave said the madstone was handed down to her husband, and later it was given to Claude Nave who moved to New Mexico."

Dora recalled that one of the Nave boys, Small Nave, was bitten by a snake. When they applied the madstone to the snake bite, it stuck to the wound and removed the venom of the snake.

Like most of us in our age of scientific proof, neither Mary Kay Oberlin or Doug Mahnkey put much faith in the powers of the madstone in spite of the tales concerning it.

Mary Kay Oberlin rubbed her fingers ever the madstene handed down to her in her family. "If someone would get bit by a rabid dog, I would be happy to try out my madstone on them to see if it really worked,"' she laughed.

But along with the doubters, there are still believers. "I talked to a lady the ether day," Doug said, "and I said that I didn't accept the madstone as a solid cure for rabies. This woman replied 'Doug, I accept it as one of God's miracles.' So I say, is the madstone a myth? Is it magic? Is it a miracle? I guess it's net for us to say. A scripture in the Holy Bible reads, 'Behold, I shew you a mystery.'"

Winnie's yard?

A few post ago I ask Winnie Jo a question and she never answered, I thought it was because she didn't know the answer. If this is Winnie's back yard I have my answer.
Years ago daddy gave aunt Winnie his iron tires wagon wheels and I ask Winnie what ever happened to them. click on this photo and if this is her back yard you can see what happen to one of the wheels. I wonder what other goodies she has up there in KC?

After the deluge of photographs showing devastated landcapes, this scene is one which perhaps sums up the loss floods have brought to Brazil.

chickens

Sam's chickens are not very smart. they hoover together at night on the ground and don't attempt to roost on the roost. They have not been in the house and the weather man is calling for snow so he may loose the whole bunch.

Donna's delivery and mine

I was visiting Donna over on "ME" and she has regaled us with the story of her first child birth. She had Jimmy in 1967, that was 2 years after my last child was born but many of her experiences were similar to what I remember about child birth.
She was in a ward with 6 other women and she relates how they enjoyed visiting with each other and comparing babies.
She told how they were short of help and that her doctor didn't show up and a doctor she had never laid eyes on delivered her baby. She didn't mention how she was afraid and wondered about everything at least that was how I felt when I delivered my first child.
Here was a paragraph that brought back memories....A couple of times a day, a nurse would bring in these box-like lights and place them under the sheet, between our legs, shining directly on the place where the baby had come from. I don't think this is done any more, and I really don't know what its purpose was. Seems like they called the light a peri-lamp. It did feel rather warm and soothing.
When I had my baby the light was a gallon vegetable can with a electric socket placed in it with a regular light bulb . The purpose of the light was to keep the stitches dry and promote healing.
I noticed Donna had her baby may 1967 and the date on the photo is may 1968, it took a year for her to get the photo developed. That pretty well tells the difference in then and now , then you would wait for something until you could get the money for it now everything is right now, instance gratification.if there isn't money for it just put it on the credit card.
I had my first child at Skagg's hospital in Branson Mo. I had a long labor 26 hours if I remember right. We were housed in a ward with other new mothers. during the night after the birth I was lying awake when they brought this woman on and put her to bed . She was in labor they said. When the light begin to break in the east the woman rose from her bed and dressed and went down the hall.
When the nurse came in with our meds she ask where is the woman that was in that bed. I told her about the day break.. break. I never heard as to what was the woman's story was but I heard whispers that the lady was drunk when she came in the hospital.

barn yard fowl

These are 2 of Sammy's chickens. They are barn yard fowl. Mixed with what every breed that happen to be in the barn yard. In the past here and I suppose is still the case in the hills and hollows around the Huntville Arkansas people had a few barn yard fowl that had developed over the years. Survival of the fittest was the rule. They didn't feed their chickens. The birds had to find their food where every they could in the barn yard. These birds had to be able to fly to the highest point on the farm and hide in the foliage from the hawks and other birds of prey. These bird would lay a few eggs and then set on their eggs and the chicks would have little meat on their frame but would live to start a new family of birds next season. long life was not in the cards for these birds. They lived and died on their own resources and any eggs the owner found was pure profit.

Squirrel lunch

The grey squirrel is not native to Britain and is considered a pest by bird lovers.
The grey was imported a 100 years past and has over run the island. Taking over habitat needed by the native red squirrel.
One bird lover has taken the task to out smart the squirrel at her bird feed station so far the score is squirrel 100. Mrs Hancock Zilch.
Alice Hancock thought she had found a way of keeping the treat just for her feathered garden visitors, but was amazed to see it was no match for the squirrel.

FBI come on down

Fleta thinks I am in danger of a visit from the FBI because I am always saying something negative about the Political circus in this country. I am ready.
There is a fellow in Christian county Mo. who got a visit from the FBI because he has a blog titled Long is wrong this was about Billy Long a new member of congress.
The report stated that the FBI was asking members of congress about anyone who made them uneasy and that is how the blogger got the special attention.
The sheriff of Christean county also stated that the FBI was looking at several people from this area.
Now some of you know that I have this abscess in my belly and that I am pretty well house bound. I go around in an old night gown here at the house because I can't stand any thing tight across my stomach. I also go bare foot in the house. I can just see the FBI coming in here and when I let them in they behold this toothless, bare foot half naked old woman who if they stay very long will either have to change my bandage or have crap running from the wound onto the floor.Yeah I will welcome them with open arms. If they show up I will ask them if I can take photos for my blog.
Any thing to break up these long January days.

I cooked beans yesterday and I ate a bowl while ago. We ate beans every day when i was a girl.
I called and old Friend awhile ago. Vivian Tusing I worked with her for years at Tyson. she has reached the great age of 87 years and is doing very well. She told me Jennifer Knight has a 2 year old girl. aunt Betty would be pleased.
I am going to do like the squirrel and go to bed.

Hillary is down

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had a bit of mishap as she was leaving Yemen on Tuesday.
Hillary fell as she stepped on the plane. I have though for several weeks that Hillard doesn't look well. Perhaps she needs to hang up the job and retire and try to enjoy the rest of her life. It is one think to be one of the boys when you are young but when you begin to feel the touch of age it is time to hang it up!

"Kum Ba Ya/Take My Hand, Precious Lord"By Lynda Randle ('08)

What does 'kumbaya' in the song "Kumbaya, my Lord" mean?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Kumbaya, my Lord" started out in the 1920s as a Gullah spiritual sung on the islands of South Carolina between Charleston and Beaufort. Gullah is the creole featured in the Uncle Remus series of Joel Chandler Harris and the Walt Disney production of "Song of the South." "Come by here, my Lord" in Gullah is "Come by (h)yuh, my lawd" (see our Gullah dictionary). American missionaries probably took the song to Angola after its publication in the 1930s, where its origins were forgotten. In the late 1950s the song was rediscovered in Angola and returned to North American where it swept the campfire circuit as a beautiful and mysterious religious lyric. That is why the song is associated with Angola in many current printed versions.

cold chickens and guineas

The hen nearest the camera has frost on her back. It is 8 degrees here and not getting warm fast. We are suppose to get up to 31 degrees today and tonight we will only drop down to 20 degrees so I can leave the water off tonight. I have to run water when it get below 10 degrees to prevent busted pipes. I am getting 6 eggs a day now. The hens will begin to lay more eggs when we reach February. I am ready for spring. You can see the corn on the ground in the photo. The chickens like and need corn for the fat content in the winter to survive the cold weather.

cream always rises to the top

Bill Clinton has commented on the Arizona tragedy and as cream always rises to the top so does Clinton. I have listen to him speak on many subjects and I don't recall him every being mean or vicious though they tried to paint him as a raciest during the last presidential campaign I think he is pure cream. I think it is time to stop pointing fingers at each other and try to be less hateful toward each other. The shooter is crazy and that is enough said. This is what he had to say....
Loughner’s alleged actions have drawn comments from across the political spectrum, including former President Bill Clinton, who called Tuesday for a change in the American political climate.

In an interview with the BBC, Clinton avoided laying blame on anyone for the weekend attack, but sided with other voices suggesting that it’s time to reconsider the tone of political debate.

“No one intends to do anything that encourages this sort of behavior,” Clinton said. “”We just have to be sensitive.”

He continued: “I think this is an occasion for us to reaffirm that our political differences shouldn't degenerate into demonization.”
