Aunt Francis loved to tell the black panther stories and scare us when we were children.
THE PANTHERS OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
This story is about the panthers or mountain lions of Southeast Missouri, an area many people call the Bootheel District. Some might think that the title of this story is talking about a sports team but no, I'm talking about panthers with four paws and a tail, the kind of panther that emits a low pitched growl and sometimes a little snarl as they come closer to you. The folks in Southeast Missouri, around Stoddard County referred to them as panthers but the more accurate name would probably be mountain lion. In some parts of the country they are called cougars or pumas. They were light brown or tan in color when grown. I have heard that the panther's snarls could suddenly rise in pitch and volume to sound like a woman screaming, a sound that would send chills down your back and generate heartbeats that felt like tom toms beating within your chest. They are very sneaky and might suddenly appear in the shadows at any time during the darkness of a Southeastern Missouri night, when the gentle breezes cause the corn leaves to jostle against each other. The rustling of corn leaves is a sound that I know well and it is a sound that can provide cover for a multitude of sneaky movements of critters big and small.
I don't know where the panthers of Southeast Missouri came from. Maybe they were left there from the time when the area was a great wilderness and swamp or maybe they came into the area after a very large drainage project, called the Little River Drainage Project, began to carry the waters from the land. The panthers were large creatures but could hide behind even the smallest of trees and bushes and seemed to be nocturnal creatures, being seen and heard mostly at night as they prowled around, looking for food. A person who was headed for the outdoor toilet after dark could suddenly change their mind and do an about face upon catching a glimpse of some shadowy movements up ahead. Many of the sharecroppers and farm workers who lived in the area of rich farmlands, woods, swamps and sloughs that made up Southeast Missouri and the Bootheel area, had heard and caught sight of the elusive, sneaky, night prowlers. I have heard many stories of panther sightings by various individuals who had lived there for many years.
I was just a very young boy of about four or five years of age, during the mid 1930's, when I first began to hear about the panthers and it seemed that whenever a group of grown ups or older people got together in the evening, around the brightness of a coal oil lamp, the conversation at some point got around to talking about panthers. I don't remember any of the farm workers saying that they had gotten a clear view of the creatures because the panthers were always so sneaky and usually were somewhat hidden in the shadows, but sometimes made some low, frightening, growls and snarls that might suddenly become a scream. Hearing those stories sometimes made the hair stand up on my arms and the back of my neck. There wasn't much hair to be seen on my arms at that time but hearing those stories made me know that it was there. I don't remember my Mom or Dad ever saying that they had seen or heard the panthers but I recall my Dad laughing when some of the stories were told.
When I reached the ages of nine and ten years old, we lived on a farm, five miles east of Bernie, Stoddard County, Missouri. My Dad did not own the farm but he worked for the farmer who did. My Dad did not own a car, at this time, and whenever we wanted to go any place, we walked. During the late summer and early fall I sometimes walked into town, on a Saturday, by myself, in the mid afternoon hours and went to a movie. The movies on Saturday always included an episode of a serial that usually ran for several episodes. The dusty, gravel roads leading into town had become very familiar to me and I still remember walking by some of the houses along the way. I had to cross three large drainage ditches, about a mile apart, on the way into town and I was familiar with each bridge. I think the movie cost a nickel and afterwards, I could get a very good hamburger at a restaurant for a dime. I can still imagine the taste of those hamburgers because they were so good. It seems, in my mind that the owner of the restaurant was named Dude Bowman, but I could be mistaken. By the time the hamburger was finished, the sun had already dipped behind the horizon and it was beginning to get dark. The darkness didn't worry me because I knew the roads well and it usually took me about an hour to get home where my Mom and Dad would be reading something by the light of a coal oil lamp. Five miles in an hour is a very fast walk. I felt very safe starting out and had no fear of harm from any human beings. Our dog, Trigger, would come down the road to meet me as I got closer to the house. Starting toward home after enjoying a movie and a hamburger I was happy and felt good.
I remember a few times when I was nine or ten years old, walking home in the darkness at night, that I felt good when I started the five mile journey home but as I walked further down the dusty gravel road I began to think of some of the panther stories that I had heard from the older people as they had gathered around the coal oil lamp to talk and tell stories. I could hear the rustling of the corn leaves as the gentle breeze moved among them and caused them to rub together, making an assortment of various noises and sounds. My imagination would begin to associate creatures and animals with those sounds and I began to wonder if there was a panther over there in the corn field, following me. I could feel the hair on my arms and the back of my neck start to stand up and tingle as my heart began to beat just a little more firmly and my steps began to get a little faster. I was not a big kid but whenever we had foot races at Middle Smith School, where I was a student and Miss Pauline Murphy was my teacher, I could always hold my own with any of the bigger kids. My little legs and feet could move very well and I was in pretty good physical shape for a little kid. As the sounds of the creatures that were stalking me from the rows of the cornfield became more real in my imagination, I could picture in my mind the possibility that it was probably a panther over there watching me as I walked. I didn't really think there was a panther there but yet the possibility was playing across the movie screen of my imagination and my feet were moving a little faster. Soon I began to think that the panther was getting a little closer and then I knew what I should do..........RUN! I knew that I could run fast and didn't think a panther would have a chance of catching me as I moved to the center of the road and ordered my legs and feet into motion. I was really fast at a time like that and my feet could fly and I could move like the wind down that country road for hundreds of yards. By the time I was running out of breath, I knew that I had outran that panther and had left him in the dust. I felt good again and had to smile as I started to regain my breathing.
I remember one night in particular when some people had been talking and telling stories about hearing panthers and seeing strange lights in the distance. Now those strange lights might just be the subject of another story later on, but right now I am still dealing with, and trying to elude these panthers. The light from a coal oil lamp (kerosene) does not give a lot of light and any rooms or areas outside it's direct line of sight becomes quite dark and shadowy. I remember hearing a noise behind a door as I walked near a doorway of our house. It was a strange, scratching noise coupled with a couple of low grunting sounds. My heart quickened as I looked at that door and heard the noise again. The doors in that old house were built off the floor somewhat to allow for air circulation when the door was closed. I heard the scratching sounds coming from near the bottom of the door and I looked down. I saw something move and it looked like a panther tail or paw reaching out from the crack at the bottom of that door. I knew immediately what I should do. I stomped on that panther paw as hard as I could with my foot and then turned around to run. They caught me as I was about to exit the house and it was then that I learned that the panther paw that I saw reaching out from the crack under the door was my Dad's hand. I had stomped it pretty hard but he was laughing and gave me a big hug. I can still imagine seeing that panther paw sticking out from under the door and it brings a smile and a warm memory.

Alex trebek

Is there anything Alex Trebek can't do? The "Jeopardy" host apparently doubles as a crimefighter.
Trebek, 71, snapped his Achilles tendon and injured his other leg when chasing down a burglar at his San Francisco hotel Wednesday morning, according to that city's KGO-TV.
As a side note Mr. Trebek stated he jumped out of bed when he realized there was someone in his room going thro' his belonging he in hast pulled on his shorts and gave chase. ,There it is he sleeps in the nude, not that there is any thing wrong with that you know but it was news to me.
thursday
The young guineas are growing in leaps and bounds.
This is suppose to be another hot day.
My health nurse came yesterday and she said she was going to quite also so soon there wont be any home health but Obama and the gang of 6 has said they are going to charge 75 dollars a month so I wouldn't be able to afford the home health any way.
The Bush/Obama wars has ruined this country and I hope the powers that be are happy.
The Bible says that in the last days rich men will throw their gold in the street and cry for the rocks to fall on them to hide them from the wrath of God.I say to the might rich who are grasping trying to get more gold your day of judgment is coming.

retirement
RAISE THE RETIREMENT AGE: There are various proposals, but they all reflect the reality that life expectancy has risen since the program was created 75 years ago — and continues to rise. The age for eligibility already has risen to 67 for anyone born after 1960. Some proposals suggest moving the full retirement age to 70 and lifting the early retirement age for partial benefits — currently 62 — to 64 or 65. Others also include benchmarking future increases in the retirement age to advances in longevity.
Betty and Fleta maybe you had better retire now while you still can.

sammy's pullets
Sammy has some nice looking pullets and I fear we are going to have trouble one of these days. Sammy has a tendency of getting the selling bug on and one day he will decide to sell his nice pullets and the fat will hit the fire cause I like the looks of them and I am not going to let him sell out.
I went to the doctor yesterday and we had a good meeting of the minds. I convinced him I am not going to be cured and what I want from him is for him to try to make my life a little more comfortable.
He said I had a funges around my wound and that was why I had all the blisters. he prescribed some onintment and gave me an antibotice along with a pain pill so I can sleep at night. so if this doctor doesn't leave town or die maybe I have some help in town.Of course he might die he is my age.

Sister's gift
rained last night but don't get overly excited it is still hot as a fire cracker this morning.
I saw on this web site I read some woman posted that cucumbers were 1.29 each in Pennsylvania and by that price Fleta brought me 25 dollars in cucumbers. A few weeks ago Sam bought a tomato that cost one dollar so she brought me 50 dollars in tomatoes at that price.
I cooked a full pan of tomatoes and will freeze them. I really didn't want to do that but she went out in the heat an picked them for me so I reasoned I could at least work up what we wouldn't eat before they ruined.
Fleta has grown some garden vegetables this year and most of us have not raised any thing much.
These photos are some of Sam's chickens and the guineas that hatched 3 Weeks ago. I never saw any thing grow like the guineas have. Another hen is setting so I guess we will have more keets soon if SAM can catch them before the cat does.
I posted the copper head snake for Sam. He came in yesterday and said he killed a copper head snake out by the feed containers for the chickens. I thought it probably was a ground snake and it was. Sam and the neighbor call all snakes copper heads.

death angel

Some of the most beautiful, but most deadly fungi are a group of species collectively known as the death angel. A single specimen of any of these three mushrooms, Amanita bisporigera, Amanita virosa, and Amanita verna, can be deadly. All three species are pure white, with white gills that are free from the stalk. All have an annulus, or ring (which is the remnant of the partial veil, which protects the gills as they are developing) around the stalk. All three have a volva, or cup at the base, which is the remnant of the universal veil that surrounded the young fruiting body primordium. Like all Amanita species, they are mycorrhizal, which means they have a symbiotic (mutualistic) association with the host tree. In our part of the country the association is with oak (Quercus spp.) trees, but in other parts of the country the association may be with other hardwoods or conifers.
mushrooms "fly agaric"

Also called the “fly agaric” mushroom, this is one of the most famous mushrooms in the world, probably because of its distinct (and beautiful!) bright red cap with lovely white warts, and because it is alleged to have some kind of psychoactive properties. It is, in any event, poisonous. Amanita muscaria, deliver more than childish delight. They’re a species of the genus Amanita, which includes several “death angel” species that are lethal to human beings. This one, taken in sublethal doses, is perhaps the most recognizable hallucinogenic mushroom in the world. Some scholars think it is the divine Soma described in the Rig Veda of ancient India. Researchers believe it was used in religious ceremonies across Northeastern Asia and as far north as Siberia and Scandinavia. The mushroom is also known as “fly agaric,” apparently for its loopy and lethal effect on insects.
hot weather and Government spending
Sammy took his birds out and put them in the calf pen but he was like an old mother hen and keep going out to check on them . he said they were too hot and finally brought them back in the house in their brooder.
He said when it cools off he will take them out side. I said that might be September and by then they will be about ready to lay eggs. LOL
Talks on the dept ceiling in our government has broke down again. I think what they are doing is trying to convince everyone they are really trying so when they reach an agreement we will all be so relieve we will not notice that they are all a bunch of no count bums.
With all the talk of saving on medicare and social security I have not heard one word of trying to save money by stopping the wars we are financing around the world.
In case you have not heard we are having very hot weather here.

Obama and his repubs
Sammy's bantams are still in the brooder. I want him to move them out to the calf shelter pen but he thinks it is too hot.
I don't have much to say except to complain about the heat so I wont.
Obama and his repubs are trying to find ways to save money on the backs of the poor and old people every day now. The report yesterday they were near an agreement. The great news was that that the mighty rich would not have to pay taxes, isn't that grand.

man on a trip

JUST IN CASE YOU MISSED FLETA'S POST , SHE SAID ...
Lane's 1 up story
He says he and his Dad were driving thru Green Forest on the back street across from Sonic when he looked in the rear view mirror and saw a little old man coming up behind them in his motorized wheel chair wearing a little hat. And that is all.
I think Fleta's grandson is a lot like her in his dry sense of humor. anyway thank you to Lane for a good laugh on a other wise dull day.
I lost my nurse last week, she had been coming to see me for over 2 years and I feel like I have had a death in the family. She moved out of the area. On the brighter side The nurse called yesterday and ask what supplies I needed. She will be here today. We will see if she brings what I need.

new chicks
Sam has 16 new chicks in the brooder.
The night is about to fall. I await dark every night so I can turn down the air to 75 it sets on 80 from 1 O'clock till night fall. I am praying the air conditioner will hold out till cool weather. We have had to have it worked on ever year until this year and I am holding my breath hoping it will last till September when we will start to get cooler nights about the 10Th of September.
Fleta has said that Bobbie Rhody is in a bad way. I worked with her for several years at Tyson foods. She has worked hard all her life and deserves a rest from her labors. many of the people who I worked with over the years have passed and I hope I will soon.
looking for a cool spot
It is hot and dry here and most of the mid west is under this heat wave.
I went to feed the chicks this morning and had two more babes in the hen house.
Helen is home from Vegas and says it is hot where she lives also.

naked necks

These chickens are named turkins or naked necks. Some think they are related to turkeys but this is a fallacy .
The Transylvanian bird's naked neck results from a random genetic mutation that causes the overproduction of a feather-blocking molecule called BMP12, a new DNA study shows. (Get the basics on genetics.)
The mutation first arose in domestic chickens in northern Romania hundreds of years ago. The naked neck chicken—also dubbed the churkey or turken—has a chicken-like body but a turkey-like head atop a long, deep-red neck.
Surprisingly, when scientists treated standard-breed chicken embryos with BMP12 in the lab, the young chickens developed no feathers on their necks—suggesting the neck is more sensitive to the molecule, according to study leader Denis Headon, a developmental biologist at the University of Edinburgh's Roslin Institute

night mares

I awoke this morning and had to get up like I do most days and I am so desperate for sleep I went back to bed and low and behold I drifted of to sleep and then I had a dream or a night mare if you please.
I dreamed my son and I went to Florida and went to visit the Casey Anthony family. They made us welcome and we were having a great time then Sam goes to the supper market and has a fender bender that renders our car non usable.
At that time mom Anthony demands that we hit the road to Arkansas. Now George Anthony was really nice but mom wants us gone.
I tell her that Sam will fix the car and then we will leave and in the mean time I need to wash some cloths. OK she says and when I plug in the washing machine the plug falls off. I was trying to get the prongs out of the electric socket with a plastic handle tool when I woke and for once I was glad to be awake!
The night mare happen because while awake between naps I read on the MSNBC news that Casey Anthony was released from jail.

cactus wren

Cactus Wren
The state bird of Arizona is the cactus wren (Heleodytes brunneicapillus couesi), officially recognized in 1931. The largest North American wren (7-9 inches), cactus wrens are native to the arid south- western United States extending to central Mexico.
Cactus wrens primarily eat insects (including ants, beetles, grasshoppers, and wasps) and occasional seeds and fruits. Almost all water is obtained from its food (a true bird of the desert, the cactus wren rarely drinks free standing water, even when available).
A bird of arid regions, the cactus wren is often found around yucca, mesquite or saguaro. Cactus wrens nest in cactus plants; sometimes in a hole in a saguaro, or a spot where prickly cactus spines provide protection for the nest.
Male and female cactus wrens mate for life and are similar in appearance. They protect their established territory (where they live througout the year) and aggressively defend their nests from predators. Cactus wrens also destroy the nests of other bird species, pecking or removing their eggs.
Turkey

Wild Turkey
The wild turkey was designated the official state game bird of Massachusetts in 1991. A true native American, the eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) is the largest and most widely distributed of the six recognized subspecies of wild turkey in North America. The male can grow up to four feet tall and weigh well over 20 pounds. Hens may be almost as tall but usually weigh no more than 12-14 pounds. The wild turkey is also an official state symbol of Massachusetts, Alabama, and South Carolina.
Native Americans enjoyed an abundance of turkeys for thousands of years before settlers arrived in the New World, although Indians generally avoided eating turkey (regarding it as "starvation food" - believing that turkey was fit to hunt only by children, women, and Europeans). The Indians valued turkeys more for their feathers and as spiritual symbols.

hanging on by a hair

Sister is in California staying in a hotel. I just realized how different we are. Hotel hopping is not something I want to do ever. I like home.
She is on the third floor and while looking out the window she spotted two males coming out the back door of a restaurant, they were smoking a pipe then Sister calls 911 and the cops came and threw the fellows in the hoosegow. No doubt the pipe contained Marijuana.
I would never have called the cops. I think live and let live is best unless the person you are spying on is doing real harm to someone else.
US prison population at a glance
The “war on terror” is endlessly peddled by the American political establishment as a crusade for freedom and liberty around the world. Yet, as the latest prison figures again demonstrate, far from representing freedom, justice and democracy, the United States is notorious for its propensity to jail its own population.
The US incarcerates a far higher percentage of its population than any other country, with its prison population accounting for fully a quarter of the world’s prisoners. In 2006, newly released Census Bureau data indicate, the US incarcerated population stood at 2.1 million. According to separate figures put out by the Justice Department, by June 30, 2006, the prison population stood at well over 2.2 million.
No other country in the world comes close to these numbers. The far more populous China ranks second, with a prison population of approximately 1.5 million. The number of incarcerated persons in the US now exceeds the population of all but three cities in the country, and is equivalent to the combined populations of Seattle, Boston, Atlanta and Washington, D.C.
The number of inmates held in US state and federal prisons in 2006 was more than double the 1990 prison population, according to the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. The research and advocacy group The Sentencing Project estimates that in 2006, one in every 133 Americans was in prison or jail. Excluding the child population from the total brings this ratio close to one in every 100 adults behind bars.
Minorities continue to make up an enormously disproportionate percentage of the incarcerated. Approximately 41 percent of the adult correctional population were black in 2006, and 19 percent were Hispanic. One in every nine black men between the ages of 25 and 29 were incarcerated in 2006, as were one in 26 Hispanic and one in 59 white men of the same age group. According to the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics, black men have a one in three chance of serving time in prison at some point in their lives; Hispanic men have a 17 percent chance; white men have a 6 percent chance.
Moving day again
Sammy moves chickens more than anyone I have ever known.
He sold the 32 rooster and only had 9 pullets in this pen so he moved his flock of young heavy chicks in with them and moved his hatches of bantams into the coup they had been in.
Betty said Larry had started the tractor and scooped a bucket of water at the pond and dumped it in the chicken pen to cool her hens down. It was 105 there . We only hit 101 yesterday.
Sammy wasn't to be out done cause he turned the water hose on and wet the chick pen down. I thought he was going to spray the chicken. I said don't spray them you will give them a heart attack.

juror number 12
The miserable postscript for a Casey Anthony jurorBy Kerry Sanders, NBC News
Her name remains a secret. She’s known simply as juror number 12. And while she has a certificate from Florida’s 9th Circuit, embossed with calligraphy thanking her for her duty as a member of the Casey Anthony jury, her life since being released from that duty has been one of cat and mouse.
A red-haired woman in her 60s who moved to Florida from Michigan, she told the court she worked at a Publix Grocery when she was questioned as a potential juror.
Now, she’s in hiding.
Juror number 12 left Florida. Her husband, fighting back tears, tells NBC News he’s not sure when she’ll return to her home in Florida.
Why? He says she fears half of her co-workers want her head on a platter.
The other may understand what she did, but she didn’t want to face them.
She was due to retire in the fall, but Juror number 12, after being released from sequestration, chose to call her boss to announce she couldn’t come to work. She didn’t feel safe.
She retired over the phone.
The husband, who sat with two NBC News producers, glanced repeatedly at his blood pressure monitor on the coffee table and the Bible next to it.
This God-fearing family describes the after-effects of the Anthony verdict as traumatic.
First, for 44-days, he was separated from his wife.
And she was separated from the quiet life they once shared. And now he remains concerned about her health.
And now, they both face vitriol from those who are unwilling to accept a jury of peers reached a fair verdict based on the evidence presented.
In a back room, the husband has a manila envelope filled with letters.
Each is a request from a different news organization asking Juror number 12 for an interview.
Her husband had packed his own bag and says he’s ready to leave if and when the court releases his wife’s name. For now, the court record of all the jurors’ names remains sealed.
Her husband says, before she left the state to escape, she told him “I’d rather go to jail that sit on a jury like this again.”

Edwell was the five-year-old daughter of Winnie Edwell (not identified by

Family tree maker I found ...In December Court 1780, the children of Winny Edwell were apprenticed to John Powel. Their names were. Sarah, Jon athan, Judith, Elizabeth, Joseph, ...

Winnie was probably the mualoto counted in the 1786 in 1780 other children were bound out by Winnie Edwell were sarah, Johnthon, Robert Judith and Joespah Edwell. also found in the Melungeon of N.C. S.C. LA. and Texas..
His widow, formerly Elizabeth Edwell, born about 1780, was living in
Caswell County on 10 November 1854 when she appeared before the Hustings
Court in Virginia to obtain a survivor's pension. She stated that they
were married in December 1799 in Caswell County, and her husband died
there in his own house on 19 July 1847 [M805-807, frame 582]. Elizabeth
Edwell was the five-year-old daughter of Winnie Edwell (not identified by
race) who was bound to John Williams of Caswell County on 20 December
1780. Winnie Edwell was probably the "free Winnie" who was counted as a
"Mulatto" in the 1786 State Census for the Caswell District of Caswell
County adjacent to "Mulattoes" Arthur Toney, William Hood, and John Wright
. Arthur was a Caswell County taxpayer in 1790 [NC:79], an insolvent
taxpayer in 1802 [Court Minutes E:38], and head of a Caswell County
household of 10 "free colored" in 1820 [NC:90].
Family tree maker I found ...In December Court 1780, the children of Winny Edwell were apprenticed to John Powel. Their names were. Sarah, Jon athan, Judith, Elizabeth, Joseph, ...
so who was the dark beauty Winnie Edwell in our past? cousin? wife?
let the fingers do the walking

some time I see some of the most unnecessary products advertised on the TV and I wonder how people can be so dumb as to be persuaded to buy that product.
This is the case with the Bengay product with the massage bumps on the lid, What is wrong with the fingers? fingers have been massaging the body for years and they are free, if you don't want to use your fingers get a monkey or a Centipede .

Walebone country

Fleta said...
We have thought that Joseph married a daughter of John Powell named Nancy. I think now that this Joseph is closer to John Powell's age than his children's age and I think Nancy McClain was likely Nancy Whalebone, John Powell's half sister. I found references to the above Maryland records on the net that say Joseph McClain's father John McClain (Patsy will like this) once owned a farm in Maryland called The Gleanings, inn 1739 he purchased in a part of Prince George's County.
Fleta is right I love it that Nancy Whalebone, (granddaughter of that thief imprisoned and hung in the tower of London and daughter of the thieving street urchin Duke Whalebone) owned the land our mighty government is build on. The land of a thief is APPROPRIATE for the thieves whom walk those gilded hall ways every day, don't you think?
Betty Ford

Betty ford Death ....Betty Ford died on July 8, 2011 from natural causes. Funeral ceremonies were scheduled for Palm Springs, California and Grand Rapids, Michigan. Rosalyn Carter, Lynne Cheney, Cokie Roberts and others chosen by Ford are scheduled to give eulogies.
Betty Ford was an out spoken woman who spoke her mind and let the chips fall where they might.
When Ford lost the election to Carter Betty had to speak for him because he was crying so hard he couldn't speak. Betty was up to the job even if her husband wasn't.
Gerald Ford was never elected to the office of the vice president or the president. he was appointed when Nixon resigned in disgrace and promptly pardoned Mr. Nixon. Many felt he made a deal to get to be president and we didn't forget when he stood for election.
We might have elected Betty if she had run.

kieth and kin, Barzillia Powell

Years ago when we first started doing family research I came across the name Barzillia Powell and told Fleta that name is so unusual we should be able to find who he was easily now 20 some odd years later finally we know who he was. family research is so much fun, Peter was the son of John Powell brother to our KY. Charles Powell the second......Will of Peter Powell, Sr.
Book 1, Pages 12-13
In the name of God, Amen. I, Peter Powell, of Macon County and the State of Missouri being greatly advanced in age and calling to mind the uncertainty of the time it may please God to call for me, though thanks to His goodness, I am of sound mind and memory, do make this my last will and testament. After paying all my debts, I give to my wife, Julia Powell, Two Hundred Acres of land, the place that I now live on for her life-time, and then to her two children, Martha Jane Powell and James Washington Powell. Also, I give to my wife, Julia Powell and Martha Jane and James W. Powell all my beds and bed-clothing, and all the household and kitchen furniture to be equally divided between the three, and also, One Year Provision.
I give Martha Brown One Hundred Dollars.
I give the balance of my property to my oldest children, Henry Powell, Barzillia Powell, Mary Harrelson, John Powell, William Powell, and my grandson, John Allen Powell, to be equally divided among them.
This signed and sealed this 18th day of June 1849.
Peter Powell X his mark
prickly pear idea

The big story on TV after finding that Casey Anthony would be released next Wednesday was where will she go? Here is a new flash for you her parents will pick her up at the curb.
Today is Friday and I see the great rich men in government are going to cut my social security and reduce my medical benefits to balance the budget so they can still go around the world waging war and maintain their pay scale.
President Barack Obama will be a one term president if he goes along with this bright idea. The truth be told a lot of Anthony wiener's ship mates may find their selves joining him in the unemployment line soon.
I expect Obama would find him self with a serous opponent in the primary from his own party under these circumstances. He best study the presidency of Lydon Johnson.
Obama said a few days ago he wouldn't mind being a one term president. we wouldn't mind it either.
(1) Over 34 million retired workers currently receive Social Security benefits -- averaging a modest $14,100 a year.
(2) In 2008, 23% of retirees receiving Social Security depended on it for all or almost all of their income.
(3) According to the AARP, Social Security kept 36% of seniors out of poverty in 2008.
(4) Reducing Social Security benefits would cause many seniors to have to choose between food and drugs and rent and heat.
(5) Ninety-five percent of seniors -- almost 37 million in 2008 -- get their health coverage through Medicare.
(6) Without Medicare, seniors -- many of whom live off of Social Security -- would have to turn to the costly and uncertain private market for health insurance.
(7) Social Security and Medicare are extremely successful social insurance programs that permit America’s seniors to retire with dignity and security after a lifetime of hard work, and relieve young American families of worry about their own futures, allowing freedom of opportunity in America.

verdict... people are stupid

If you could go to jail for stupid a lot of Floridans would be behind bars
I watched the judge in Florida sentence Casey Anthony and also saw the people out side the court house with their sign.
I was amazed at the ignorance of the people on the court house concrete.
Some wanted to know why the judge couldn't over rule the sentence of the jury.
some wanted to send her to prison for 20 years when the judge sentenced her to the Maxim sentence that was available under the law. 4 years was the most she could be sentence under the law and he sentenced her to 4 years.
They didn't think she should get credit for the time she has been in jail, I think they would change their mind if it was they who were in jail for 3 years.
I have decided that we have the most uneducated stupid people on the face of the earth and no wonder the country is on the decline. How can people live 30 to 40 years not not manage to pick up some knowledge along the way.
The crowd was white, middle class females on the average with a few white males trowed in the mix . I suspect possible the males were there looking for a good lay so I will eliminate the few men. I saw 2 black females and the rest were white females 30 to 40 years young. no black men were present and I think they probably had already found their good lay and were off under air condition .
I think they will get behind close doors and set a date to release her in the next few weeks after the crowd goes home.
O J Simpson was sentenced in Nevada for murder, no matter what they charged him for the murder was the reason, after the he beat the charge in California but he was stupid and that is why they were able to get him in prison perhaps this woman isn't so stupid we will see what happens.
