THE ENGLISHMAN

Our first ancestor to come to Virginia, according to my grandpa Powell , from England . This first Powell was in debt and to avoid prison he searched for a ship to take him to the colonies.
The night before he was to sale he went into a local church and stole a golden statue which he hid in a barrel of lard aboard ship.
upon his arrival he pulled the gold from the lard and said "come out of there you greasy god." He left a family in England and married here, having spent all his gold before he died hence according to grandpa all the Powells had been poor from that time on.
If anyone comes across a record of a Powell that went to the colonies to escape debtors prison and the same place has a record of a local church that lost some valuable golden statue about the same time we would like to know Powell's first name.
We want it known how ever we don't have any gold. That was gone long ago.

Maybe, after pulling the gold from the lard barrel, your ancestor was the first person ever described as "slick."
