Grandma saved her yeast, she placed a piece of the dough in a jar with sugar and water and this yeast would grow until the next time grandma baked. In the 1940's grandma stopped baking bread, her family was grown and grandma made quick bread for each meal.
in the 1950's grandma found her yeast wrapped in a cloth stored in her black trunk. It was a dry piece and grandma wondered if it was still alive. She placed the dough ball in warm water and sugar and behold it was active and she baked bread again.
In the 1950's grandma belonged to a women's club and they published their favorite receipts. The receipts are in my grandma hand and we hold this to be a precious book. This is the picture of grandma bread receipt in her own hand writings.

I can't believe there was no eggs in that bread recipe. I have oftened wondered if it was an oversite.
no they did not put eggs in bread
When Grandma lived on the farm. She sold most of the eggs. She probably did not use them in her
recipes, but sold them.
I wish I could give Baby Sister some eggs I have about 6 dozen in the Frig. When I bake stuff, I just eat it and get fatter.

you know daddy didn't like eggs in corn bread, or pan cakes or any kind of bread. I am sure grandma saved ever egg she could to sell.
Well I have used her recipe to make bread and after the first time I always add eggs to it and it is much better!
There was no one that made better bread than Mama and she added eggs. It also took Mom all day to make bread because she did it some what like Grandma Powell and made that sponge and then kept adding cups of flour through out the day.
Remember how Mom sprinkled the left over flour and sugar that was left on the rolling board, over the top of the Cinnamon Rolls and then added cream over the rolls right before she cooked them. The cream, flour, and sugar cooked and made a goo. You know most people just put icing on them but we never had power sugar. Well I have made them Mom's way a few times for my kids and they love them. When I make Cinnamon rolls they always ask, “Are they like Grandma Powell's?". They usually are not. I always have power sugar in the cupboards but I have to go to the store to buy the cream to make those rolls.
You must be right about Grandma Powell's eggs....She also has a Christmas Special Cake recipe in that book and does not add eggs to that either! She did have a lemon pie and a pancake recipe that she added eggs to but I'll bet she hated to add them.
