GRANDPA DUMPLIN'
i MADE CHICKEN AND DUMPLINS TODAY, THAT MADE ME REMEMBER MY GREATGRAND FATHER NO. 5. HIS NAME WAS DUKE WHALEBONE. THEY CALLED HIM DUMPLIN'. HE MIGRATED FROM ENGLAND TO THE VIRGINIA COLONIES IN 1740.ACTUALY HE HAD NO CHOICE.HE WAS IN NEWGATE PRISON IN LONDON. HE WAS A THIEF. HE HAD HIS CHOICE, GO TO VIRGINA OR GO TO PRISON. HE CHOISE VIRGINA. HIS FATHER JOHN WHALEBONE WAS SENT 20 YEARS BEFORE BUT HE CAME BACK. THEY HUNG HIM AT NEWGATE PRISON. IF DUKE HAD NOT BEEN A THIEF I MIGHT BE IN ENGLAND TODAY. COURSE I PROBABLY HAD OTHER FOREFATHERS IN JAIL, BUT THIS IS THE ONLY WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TRACK. HE SERVED 7 YEARS AS A BOND SERVENT THEN MARRIED MY GRAND MOTHER ELIZEBETH, MOVED TO NORTH COROLINIA AND DIED THERE OF OLD AGE.SISTER NO 2 THINKS THEY CALLED HIM DUMPLIN' COUSE HE WAS PLUMP,I THINK HE WAS A LADIES MAN.

I just read out your story to my OH, he laughed and said that it was a nice little story.
His mother and father was born in East London - Newgate Prison was in the city, in the Cheapside area. Aldgate, Newgate, Ludgate, Bishopsgate, Moorgate, were all gates to the city of London in ancient times.
Oops don't know what happened there - can you delete one of them!
What a great story, Patsy. I just finished writing a two-part genealogy piece to post later in the week, but it's not nearly as entertaining as yours.
