Neighbors

I called Lois Morris this after noon, Virgil and Lois Morris were my father and mother's neighbors for 50 years. Hugh Morris , their father owned a store at Carrollton AR. And after the war they bought a farm across the creek from daddy. Lois and Virgil are brother and sister and were my parents age. Lois is 84 and Virgil is 88 years old.
I like to call Lois once in a while to touch base and to talk about her memories of the days when we lived at Carrollton before world war 2. I am really glad I called , she said Virgil had been in the hospital for 2 weeks with pneumonia and she brought him home 2 days ago then last night she had to call a ambulance to come and get him and take him back to the hospital.
I know it wont be long until all the people that knew my mom and dad when they were young will be gone and I wont have anyone to talk to about the days when we lived at Carrollton AR.
I really cherish my link to my past and the people that were mom and dad's friend when they were young. There isn't many left.
She told me something that I didn't know. She said the day daddy's draft notice arrived he was at Carrollton with his team and wagon getting work done on his plow. She said mama walked to Carrollton to tell daddy his draft notice had arrived in the mail. Lois said daddy put his plow in his wagon loaded up mama and me and my brother . He said I am going to join the navy because I don't want to be a foot soldier and walk across Europe. He served his country on Iwo Jima.

I remember I would ride 'Ole Cocoa' over to their house a lot in the summer time when I was about 10. Lois would save her magazines that had "Betsy" the paper dolls in it. It was McCalls magazines I think. Anyway each issue had a tear out sheet of a doll and clothes and she would help me cut them out and give them to me. We also watched some Soap Opera...I don't remember which one. I always went over there the same time of day and it was right after they had the noon meal and the 2 men went back to work in the fields. I am sure I must have been in the way but she never told me that! Seemed like I stayed an hour or two and went home. Pat we will have to go see her when I come in Sept.....You need to go too...She won't even know who I am...

I also remember they had a little shed like building that sat in the yard and it was full of stuff from their store. I remember once she went out there and got a bottle of vinilla when she was baking something.

Also when Lizzy was so old they would sit her in one of the klitchen cane bottom chairs that had a ladder back. They would hook one of her arms over the back of the chair. She would sit on it sideways and her arm pit would be over the chair back to keep her from slumping over.

That was in the mid to late 60's and they still had a wooden cook stove. It held water in the side. They also had the quilt frame hung from the ceiling in the Living room.

Lois made cookies almost everytime I went I got a sugar cookie. Oh, they were good.

I would rather be in the Navy than be a foot soldier and walk across
Europe.

Glad you called Lois. Erin and Greg have been married a year today.

If Virgil is in Harrison my Baby will check on him.
