The mother hen keeps the baby chicks warm, she shows them what to eat and encourages them to eat all the right foods. You can hear her clucking and scratched with her feet and the babies follow her around picking up bits of food near her beak.
If a predator comes near she will call them to her and cover them with her wings. She says danger, danger and they come. Fleta can tell you that a good mother hen will fight till the death to protect her young. The babies will live and the mother becomes food for some other animal's young. As I said I have been thinking and perhaps that is the problem with a lot of youth today. The mothers go to work and the children are left to fend for themselves as best as they can.
We all need our mothers to love us and care for our needs so that when we leave her side and go out into the world we will know how to take care of our selves. .
I had one hen who had to raise her chicks in the crowded pen and she lost 3 birds. It is a tribute to her ability they she was able to raise 4 of her young even with all the problems she faced. I had the blue hen who had 9 babies and raised everyone of them. . My black hen had 8 chicks about the time that I got the hatchery chicks and I took them away from their mother and raise them with the hatchery chicks. Only 3 of this group lived. The blue hen had her babies off by her self and was able to look after her young and teach them what they needed to know to get along in this world.

Patsy, I think you have hit the nail on the head. If a child doesn't have a mother to protect and guide them they seem to have all kinds of problems. Some mothers are there they just don't fill their mother role but instead are taking drugs and living off welfare and the child suffers.
so did the bad mothers have a mother to gave them love and care when they needed it or was their mother looking after her own wants. it will be interesting to see if the hatchery chicks make good mothers.
Good question. What came first the chicken or the egg? lol
I am happy to have had a good mother who taught me to put my kids
wants and needs before my own. My husband and I did not go drinking and dancing when our kids were young. We stayed home and watched Little House on the prairie and ate pop corn together.

I agree with you, Patsy. In a perfect world, mothers would be able to stay at home and raise their families and fathers would support them and be with their families when they weren't working. But, I don't know very many mothers who can afford to stay at home these days. And I know too many fathers who would rather be anywhere but at home.
It just proves my idea that older mothers might be the best mothers. Older mothers might not need to go out and dance with younger fathers.
Good post Patsy. If I had things to do all over again, I would have stayed home with my boys. We could have done without a lot of things that we really didn't need any way. The worls says you have to keep up with the jones's, new car, house fancy clothes...so it takes 2 to have all this crap. Yep, kids need their mama's. I think if you can have a child, you can stay home with it at least until school age. It can be done.
