CHICKENS AND TOMATOES>

In 3 or 4 days my chickens will hatch if brother stays awake and doesn't have a power failure! This is my brooder. I bought a metal tub like mama used to wash cloths in when we were young. People use the plastic totes from wal-mart but they have corners and the chicks can pile up and smother in a corner, so the round tub is better, don't ask what it cost. I also bought the hooded lamp for warmth. they can get under the hood if they are cold and can move back if they get warm.

I planted 2 tomato plants in a truck tire. I used 2 tires and have 4 plants. I suppose you could say I have a truck patch of tomatoes.
We had a neighbor named Eva Bell when I was young . I went to her house in early spring and she had baby chickens in a tub in her upstairs placed next to their chimney. with a fire going in the wood stove down stairs the baby chicks were warm. My grandmother Powell did the same.
Grandma keep white leghorns and sold eggs to buy their food. My grandmother was a very thrifty woman.
She had 2 large chicken houses one for pullets and one for roosters. She butchered the Leghorn roosters and the family ate them. In the depression she had a kerosene incubator and set eggs for her self and sold people baby chicks.
Once a tax collector from Berryville Ar. wrote grandpa Powell a letter wanted him to pay sale tax on grandma's chicks she had sold.
Grandpa told me he wrote that fellow a letter and told him if he was man enough to collect come on out here. grandpa said that was the last time he heard from the tax collector!

I know I am my Grandmother's daughter. I am reminded of myself when you tell those stories of her.
I never realized until I was old that I was very much like her, but indeed I am and I am also glad of it. sis 3

I think about HENRY Powell walking all the way home from AR to Mo having to travel at night when the Rebels said they did not want him anymore because he could not sight a rifle. He made it home and lived a long time. I think of his son Jack telling him he thought he could be of more use to him home plowing than in school as all he learned that day was a b and c!

Hi Patsy, After I'm finished eating at Sister Three's house in July, I'll drive on up to your place for a tomato sandwich supper, okay?
