Snakes and blueberries.

Daddy was a great story teller, before TV and all these new finagled things that is what people did in the evening for entertainment.and daddy was very good at his craft.
Once he told us about going with a group of men at carrollton to pick huckleberries on the mountain above carrollton.
Daddy wondered off by himself looking for that special patch of berries so he could fill his bucket.
He said he was standing on this large boulder and heard this rattle, looking down he saw this really big rattle snake, running back to the group he told them and they said how big was this snake. Daddy said he said as big as the calf of my leg, thinking that he was stretching the size.
They went and after a heroic effort they killed the snake and was surprised to see the snake had swallowed a full grown rabbit and was as large as daddy had said!
They carried him, the snake off the mountain tied to a pole and for several years we had a rattle from the snake.
The rattle was lost years ago but I still remember that sound when we shook the rattle.

Snakes give me the creeps! Any kind of snake. We just have garden snakes in Whatcom County, but I'm scared of them too. They do bite but apparently don't have enough venom to cause much trouble. I guess it doesn't really matter whether they are venomous or not if they can scare you to death!
I wouldn't have any blueberries if I had to go wading through rattlesnakes to get them!
