Mountian mama

This little girl has grown up and she has a blog . You should take a look. How mamy of you had a swing like this. My grandpa Gaddy made one for my aunt Hettie Mae and I spent many happy hour swinging on hers.
Mountian Mama also wrote about the flat irons, or as they were also known, sad irons. I looked on google and found this......Flat irons were also called sad irons or smoothing irons. Metal handles had to be gripped in a pad or thick rag. Some irons had cool wooden handles and in 1870 a detachable handle was patented in the US. This stayed cool while the metal bases were heated and the idea was widely imitated. (See these irons from Central Europe.) The sad in sad iron (or sadiron) is an old word for solid, and in some contexts this name suggests something bigger and heavier than a flat iron. Goose or tailor's goose was another iron name, and this came from the goose-neck curve in some handles. In Scotland people spoke of gusing (goosing) irons.

Thank you for the nice link Patsy. I really appreciate it. You learned a lot more about those miserable irons than I ever knew.
I found two of them in my yard, buried in the dirt when I was digging gardens. I often wondered if the Lady of the house was blessed and got a newer style and took those old sad irons out and buried them.I certainly wouldn't blame her if she did.
