The family cow

I love cows. I would keep one now if I could. The smell of a cow on fresh green grass is the best perfume know to man.
When we moved to the farm after daddy came home from the war mine and Richards job was to bring in the cows to be milked.
We would run in a cow after daddy finished milking the cow in the barn
We had a white cow named pet and Richard and me would take turns squeezing her tit milking her milk into our mouths. I wonder if dad ever caught on why one of her quarters has less milk than the other 3?
To milk a cow and have a pail full of fresh milk is a delight. Oat meal tastes so good with fresh cream poured over the bowl.
I have become allergic to milk but I still would love a glass if I could have it.
The Jersey cow has the most butter fat and is the best cow for a family to own.
We had a Guernsey cow once and when she calved she was crazy and would fight every thing in sight.
One day my brother and I went to bring in the cows not realizing that ole dude had a new calf. she ran for us bellowing and pawing the ground. We managed to get to the only tree in the field a small dog wood tree and there we were perched on a limb with Dude at the foot of the tree. We had to stay treed until dad came to our aid.
It wasn't long until dad taught us to milk and we were milking cows along side our father perhaps he did know we were milking ole pet in the lot.

You know we all had to take our turn milking the Family cow. Betty taught me to milk at about 10 years old. I never could teach Gilbert how to milk the cow...I often wondered what I was doing wrong that I could not teach him to milk......when I left home Daddy had to milk the cow...

I love cows too - they have the prettiest of faces - and I love the way they just chew the cud, and chill out and left life go by without a care in the world

Hi Patsy:-) I so love reading your memories of when you were a child! My mom was raised on a farm as well and she's always got stories about the cows, pigs, chickens, etc. One of my nephews through marriage has a dairy farm and I love visiting there although it's all mechanical now the way they milk them there. xox

I will tell you I hated milking I wish I had played dumb like Gilbert and never learned how.

I thought it was great fun to milk the cows. And I, like Allotment Lady, think they are oh so pretty.

I'm glad I serve as a little inspiration every now and again, Patsy. You inspire me too.
