Great minds

Sister came to visit and I had a great time talking about polities and what might be the out come of this election. Sister and I don't always agree but I enjoy talking to a great mind and today was no different.
Sister brought me two books and I have been reading until I can hardly see.
I am a student of history and she loaned me a book . I can recommend this book to everyone.
Henry Wiencek is the author and the title is..THE HAIRSTONS and American family in black and white. This is a tremendous book about a family Dynasty founded by Peter Hairston an immigrant 1695-1785 who started a family who had plantations over Virgina, north Carolina and Mississippi.
This family built a empire of plantations and owned thousands of slaves some of which were the Hairston plantations owners sons and daughters. One of the famous kin was Jeb Stuart will known to anyone who is a student of history.
Mr. Wiencek traveled across the south searching for this history in white and black families. This is a book worth reading not fiction but reads like a good novel.
While in the midst of this book I had a thought which I want to share with you. On eve so to speak of our election a black man may attain the highest office in our land, I call him black because in the south no man or woman who carried a drop of black blood was a negro by law and custom. Even if Obama has white blood from his mothers family he would be classed as a negro in the south, even to this day. Obama does not carry slave blood but his wife and two daughters do.
Then I began to think about Michele Obama.
If Obama wins the presidency and I live to see him take the oath what I want to see is not Obama enter the white house but I will be thrilled to see a woman walk into our white house as first lady of this land and caring the blood of her slave ancestors. Oh what a thing to see. During the civil war the black units in the civil war sang a song as they went to battle, "OH MY LORDY WHAT A TIME". YES!

I have read that book...it is so good. I finished one this week you would love. THe Hemings. It is about the black family that Sally Hemings if from...it is their history and I enjoyed it so much. I read fast and if I am nto careful I skim. So if I felt like I was going to start skimming in this book I put it up and would read later.

Jefferson's daughter and granddaughter said the Carr brothers were the parents of Sally's kids. But DNA on the Y side proved. Eston's father was a Jefferson. Jefferson Haplo is K something which is rare. Then the Monticello group said that Randolph
Jefferson was the father. During the time each of her children were conceived...Jefferson was at Monticello. But this book is not just about Sally it is about all the Hemings. I really liked it.

Now I am reading a book about a boy whose father lived in the Kurdish area of Iraq. He (father)was a Jew. In 1950 he moved to Israel and then to CA where he was a professor. Years later the son who grew up like a beach boy decided to look at his father's roots...that is the story of the book. and it is so good.

Nothing is a wonderful as a good book.

Patsy, I don't like to buy books. I would rather borrow them or check them out...for there is not much to do with them after reading. If I lived up there and I bought one and then could pass it to you and Fleta I might feel better about the purchase. The 3 books on my site are checked out or borrowed. I don't buy many books.
