my grandfather Powell was a very serious man about the Bible and what he believed. He had a neighbor who came to talk to grandpa often trying to convert my grandfather to his church.Mr. Smith was a seven day Adventist and he believed certain dietary laws that grandpa Powell didn't subscribe to. Mr. Smith would not eat pork. he called it the devil's food.
One day Mr. Smith arrived at the noon meal and grandpa invited him to draw up a chair and eat with them.
My grandmother always cooked pinto beans with plenty of bacon fat.
Mr. Smith ate the beans with great gusto and raved that the bean soup was the best he had every tasted. Grandpa passed the bean bowl and urged him to eat all he wanted which he did.
Finally Mr. Smith pushed back his chair and said he couldn't eat any more. Grandpa told him he had just ate the devil's soup because the beans were cooked in bacon fat.
grandpa would not lead you into sin but if you walked in on your own he would let you eat you fill.

I LOVE this! That's what that guy gets for coming to Grandpa's door and trying to convert him.
I love the stories...I often wonder when I am dead and gone who will know my stories....
Your tulips are so pretty and Sammy's girl is a sweet looking dog. That chicken looks intent on setting the eggs and the guineas seem to be doing good. Granpa must have been a fun loving man. I doubt the preacher appreciated his humor! lol.. It is raining here today.
I enjoyed this tale :) What happened after the guy found out he had eaten pork?
I guess that was Eb Smith. I did not know they were of the 7 day religion. I love hearing of Grandpa as I really did not know him.
you know when Patsy goes it will be our last real conection with Grandpa Powell....well Winnie Jo knew him but she is not as talkative as us...
Patsy is in the hospital again....they want to operate on her wound and she will not let them at this time.....at 12;30 3/26 she has stopped throwing up...
