Worthy died at a young age, the family story was they had a blizzard and Grace was having a baby, Worthy went out in the storm to get a doctor for his wife and came down with pneumonia and died.
Worthy was a family foke hero and I heard many stories about him.
His nature was jolly and he enjoyed making people laugh. Grandma Powell told me this one.
There was a holly roller brush arbor revival and the Powell sons went to see what it was all about. The next morning Melton and Jess told of what they had seen and how people had carried on then Worthy said I tell you when a woman falls down on the floor and kicks her heels over her head you have seen it all.
Worth was on a train and he was pushed or fell off and suffered many injuries, Grandpa Richard made several trips from Carrollton to Springfield Mo. in a buggy to bring a doctor for Worthy after months of pain and suffering Worthy recovered but was always cripple in the one leg. My mother told me the rumor in the family was that Worthy was in a dispute with some ruff fellows and they pushed him off the train trying to kill him.
After Worthy recovered he was addicted to morphine because they gave it to him for pain. My grandfather Melton had the family lock him and Worthy in a room for days until Worth got over his addiction. Grandpa was in the room to stop Worthy from hurting himself . I suppose it was a terrible time for the family.
I have always wondered if Worthy was back on the morphine while he was living in Kansas and that may have been the cause of his death.
Fleta said to me once how hard it must of been for Richard Powell to make the many trips to get the doctor, the last trip he left his buggy and team as payment. I said from what we had heard about grandma Betty it probably was easier than staying home with her.
Aunt Thelma said the reason Melton and Jess were teachers grandma Betty had encouraged them so they could support the family.grandpa was 30 years old before he married and the reason was he supported his brothers and sisters. I remember when grandpa's sisters visited him they showed him great respect and love.

I love to get your view on what I don't know because i was not there.
Measles was involved in Worthy's death. I have a little clipping about it. I think it unusual that Grandma Betty named kids--Maud, Robert, Jesse, John...but named the one son Worthy! It is a wonderful name.
And yes, Grace was pregnant. She had a baby a little while after he died. I think he died in April and the babe was born in July. Grace named the baby Richard Worthy.
