can i use lard in cookies instead of shortening??i have a peanut butter cookie recipe and it calls for 1/2 cup shortening, but at the store i bought lard instead of shortening, can i use it, will it change the flavor any???? thank-you!!!!
Answer ..
1. Re: can i use lard in cookies instead of shortening??I would not....I would not want my cookies tasting like bacon or anything.
2. I thought they outlawed lard. Thats what my mother-in-law told me. Where can I buy some! LOL
3. I don't even think you can get lard here in California. I've NEVER seen it in any grocery store, and I have NEVER cooked with it, not even once, in my whole life.

Isn't lard just a fancy-pants name for bacon grease that's been sitting in the fridge for a while???
Back when we raised our own pork, and before Cliff had any heart issues, I used lard in almost everything. Lard makes the BEST pie crust!
Well Pat I can see you are not going to explain so no telling what comments you will get on this....
I have a recipe for oatmeal cookies that actually calls for bacon grease instead of shortening. I've been using that recipe for thirty-some-odd years and still think they're the best oatmeal cookies ever (though we do sometimes refer to them as "heart-attack" cookies).
Now, for the new news...old news...coffee and lard were bad...NEW news coffee and lard are good. Lard is better than the shortening with trans fatty acids.
My former grandmother-in-law put a generous dollop of lard in every pot of vegetables she cooked. They were delicious, but I could feel my arteries hardening with every bite.
