Did you every gather corn in the field with a wagon and team. I have. Dad went to Jack Robertson with a wagon and team, me and Richard to harvest a corn crop.the wagon went down the roll and knocked down one row, this was called the down row. Richard gathered the down row and I worked one side of the wagon and dad worked the other row.The first thing to know it is always in November and cold when you harvest the corn. You took the ear of corn and reached around the base of the ear bending the ear over the back of your left hand while giving the ear a good whack with the right hand breaking the ear of corn loose then tossing the ear in the wagon .we didn't have gloves and soon our hands were red and chaffed from the breaking of the ear but you kept going and you were glad when the wagon was full or you ran out of corn which ever came first.Dad drove the team as well as harvesting his row.
Every time you crossed the field you covered 3 rows of corn. unless dad gathered two row , seem that was the case. We didn't shock the corn shocks. I guess Jack Robertson just turned his cattle in on the corn shocks.

Sounds like hard work and I love hearing it. I can easily tell if a ear of sweet corn is ready. I can tell by feeling it and always could. Maybe I learned at home with Dad but I don't remember. Some folks can not tell what ears are ready, but to me the 'feel' makes it easy.
We are going to raise corn for the chickens next year, I think so I will be doing what you wrote about. Larry said what we would plant but I don't remember. he sold seed for 25 years and he knows all about garden seed.
Well these chickens Kris has beat all I have ever seen...Each one lays an egg every day...You would think with 7 chickens and 6 kids we would not have a surplus of eggs but we sure do...I will be ablle to make an angel food cake soon...But I'm not using that stupid pan I used last time...
