Grandma's house

After grandpa died my grandmother moved to town and bought this house, she rented apartments and made a living in her old age. Grandma was a thrifty woman and enjoyed her last years being independents and making a living.
This is how it looks today, still apartments to rent but they turned the front yard into a gravel parking lot. In grandma's day this yard was full of flowers and shrubs. Posted by Picasa

We sat on that porch and watched the world go by! I know she enjoyed having us. I loved to eat with her...even though Daddy did not think she was a good cook. He did not like angel food cake and she did not cook with much fat. I thought it was so good to stay all night. She might boil some little potatoes and cook corn bread in one of those little stick pans. I thought it was delicous! I bought one of those little pans and my corn bread always sticks in it...it is a mess and can't be eaten.

On the wall she had stuff hanging that she had made and others had given her. She had a little wooden lamb picture up there that I made her. Momma got it back when she died and I have it. She had a crocheted item up there that Laura has in her china cabinet.

My kids made it to Birmingham, AL last night. Astrid and Ingrid called and said they were having fun. They will get to FL today.

Laura's sister gave her this trip...no cost to Laura...now Erin said...I hope they like the place like she was worried it would not be a great place to stay. I said Erin you gave it free to them, I don't think they will complain!
The Sister's Saga moves to one generation to another...same mother, same father, same place and time!

It does not look the same that is for sure.

I love the front porch and the good lines of this house. Seems like the perfect house for grandparents to live in, for grandkids to go visiting, for parties and overnights.

Your grandmother sounds like a woman who lived wisely, cooperating with her headstrong husband and then, after he passed on, making a new life exactly as she wanted. I love stories like that.

Thanks for posting this house, Patsy, and I enjoyed reading all those memories, SS3.

It sure does not look the same - I truly think Grandmas saved every little thing we all ever sent her - I really don't think it was my imagination that the couch's grew closer together with each passing year - thanks for the photo
