My grandpa told me that during the depression you could not sell your stock for money. The government came up with a plan to buy the cattle that the farmers could not keep thro the winter.
Grandpa Powell had to sell his cattle, he walked and drove his stock from Carroll County AR. To Baxter Springs Kansas where the government bought them for a few dollars a head. Our government shoot the cows they bought and dumped them in a ditch then put armed guards around the ditch to keep the local people who were hungry from coming in and butchering the dead animals. What a great country we live in.

Gas in Iraq is cheap. Same story.
Second verse.
Imagine my surprise when I read your latest entry. It was after I'd looked at a historical site earlier today and read something like what your grandfather told you about. I was different interviews about life during the depression. It was in the one with Movella Mulford at http://newdeal.feri.org/sevier/interviews/index.htm
"I remember at one time I don't know whether it was because of drought or what, but cattle prices dropped to nothing. I do remember the government buying some of the cattle. I remember my dad had an old white milk cow that we just adored, but she was getting old and he said we can't afford to feed her. I think it was because of a drought, there wasn't much feed and so he did sell to the government, I don't know, something like twenty-five head of cattle or something. Literally, they dug a big pit, and they dropped the cattle up there and shot them. Covered them over and didn't save the meat for nobody or anything. They just shot the cattle in this big trench and covered them over and let them stay there."
No wonder they called it "the great depression." How depressing is THAT story?
Of Ladies that is terrible! I am glad you told this story though. Why you reckon they let them go to waste like that? I remember seeing an old movie with Paul Newman..on a cattle farm. Seems like the cows had some disease so they shot them all just like yall said. It was an old movie.
