I REMEMBER
This is my sister's birthday, I remember the day she was born.
Richard said he remembered because he had to go across the field and cross the creek to get aunt Betty Lou and he said he was afraid he would step on a snake in the creek.
I remember having to keep the flies off her while she slept that first summer, we had no screens on the windows and the flies came in at free will.
I remember having to give her rides on my horse the second summer so she would fall asleep. Then I would ride around the house trying to get mamma's attention so she would come get the baby with out waking her so I could be free for a few minutes.
I remember she was a happy baby with out a care in the world. She always made friend in school and was popular which none of the rest of us was were except Clayton.
As a young girl she was pleasant and lovable and I called her Jeanne.

Lovely memories . . .those of us of a "certain age" seem to have the simplier kind: lazy, unhurried days with family for entertainment. I'm enjoying your pictures, also.
Betty has always been more kind hearted than the rest of us. Oh, we were all good to each other but not usually to people we had just met. Betty was always the sucker. I remember once when she went to S of O we were driving in her 51 Mercury and Betty picked up a teenage girl hitchhiking. Betty felt sorry for her. I thought it was stupid! Well I climbed in the back and the girl sat up front with Betty driving. All at once the girl pulled a knife and demanded Betty take her on to another town, I don't remember where. Betty immediately pulled the car over and told the girl to get out of the car and she did. I could not believe the girl got out; I guess she knew Betty could be mean! Maybe the girl thought it was 2 against 1 and she didn't want to fight. I have never picked up a hitchhiker but Batty probably did again.
One other thing I want to comment is on Betty's hair. I have never met another person that has hair like Betty Jean. She has said many times it is thin, fine, and flat. Well I don't even know about that but ever since she was a small girl and it was no longer white it turned into these colors that I have never seen on another human naturally. I have seen women that have frosted their hair and then it grows out some and they frost it again so the now has 3 colors of hair and the more times they frost the more various shades they have. Betty always had about 10 hair shades. Her hair ranged from white, through all of the shades of blond into several shades of brown. I have had people ask what color Betty's hair is and I respond it’s kind of 'muckel-dee-dun.' Which is not even a word but it is fitting because there is no name for her color of hair.
Yes, I felt so sorry for them...but
I would not do it now.
I always hitched rides when I went to S of O...the world was softer then...We would get rides to Branson...always a group of us.
I hope I can continue to be soft hearted.
thanks old sister for taking such good care of me when I was a wee
baby!
You had a lot of responsibility for a little girl. I hope you feel proud of your role in helping to raise all those brothers and sisters.
Hey, Patsy...don't you feel like
you did a good job! Look how we
all turned out!
My hair gets darker and darker, Helen. I just wish it would turn
gray! I truly hate it.
Well, we can only hope that someday she will be sweet and loveable again.
