The Hunter collection
Appalachian cabin with a passage way between rooms. This covered over passage was called a dog trot and many of the homes had these. The point was one room for sleeping and one room for cooking. Keeping the kitchen separate made for cooler sleeping room in summer.
By enlarging this photo I saw white chickens under the house and a dog in the yard. There are 3 people in the door way. A man and a woman and a child. This photo was made by Kephart about 1910 in the Appalachian mountains of western north Carolina.
I can see what appears to be a hand saw leaning on the cabin wall.

Don't you just love finding items of interest like this!! I had never heard of such a cabin but it certainly makes sense to have the kitchen apart from the sleeping room to keep it cooler! If only these old pictures could talk:-) xox
I will check this out.
