North carolina , 1909

I love this photo. I found it in that Appalachian collection I told you about. it was in the North Carolina mountains. I study the equipment I see on the walls of the cabin and had to laugh the one fellow wore his hat. All the men are carrying knifes. I see ammunition for a gun on a shelf but can't see a gun. How many things can you see?
the container on the end is a canteen like the army carried.
also skillets. i think the cloths are to handle the hot handles.

I see a bottle of whiskey....at least that is what I want to think it is...living there I would need it...looks like dirt floors....never could get those suckers clean...

Are they panning for gold...I see pans hung on the wall with a face wipe for each guy. I love the early 'American' furniture.

I see what looks like a whiskey bottle too. Often this was used for medicinal purposes. AMazing how often some of these guys needed a swallow to ease their pain. LOL
The long handled pans may be for cooking but if there were covers attached, may also have been bed warmers. I see a meat grinder, boxes of what may have been matches, what looks like a candle in a holder and a towel hanging from the rafters. This looks like a typical old time cabin of loggers or miners from way back when.

The hankies hanging out of the back pockets was often seen. They were easier to grab that way. I wonder if it may also have been a style, because it was a very common sight when I was a child.
I sure love the hand hewn bench they are sitting on. Wish I had that on my bach deck.

Where's the woman who cooked this meal? Is she still standing by the hot stove, waiting till they finish having fun so she can eat?

Or maybe women were nowhere around this camp?
