Several homeless men on the flickr site I mentioned have dogs. these dogs are fat and well carried for, could some of these men not be homeless but have found away to make a living with doing more than setting on the street and begging.
Thanks for visiting my blog and posting it on yours. The homeless and the panhandlers are very visible in Portland. I see the same ones every time I go downtown. The animals appear to be well cared for. Many perform with musical instruments, drums made from plastic buckets, sing, etc. I do believe to some nonconformist personalities this is their work, their jobs.
The wife and I have seen first hand that alot of the urban outdoorsmen here in Atlanta are there by choice. A couple of years ago we volunteered for the "Hosia Williams feed the hungery charity" on Thanksgiving day. By the end of our shift we more appalled than sympathetic to these people. Granted, there were people who were in need because of mental problems and the like but most were nothing more than greedy parasites looking for a free ride at the expense of others. There was no reasion for these people not to be working and contributing to society. We continue to volunteer but for more worthy causes.
Patsy, I worked in the welfare system in Kentucky for years before retiring. You get so tired of seeing people taking advantage of the system and believe me they find a way to make themselves eligible for programs like Food stamps and checks. I spent a lot of time getting people off the system that were just using it and taking if from the people that really needed it. A man was in the shopping center here with a sign asking for money for food and my son told him he would take him to buy food. He refused the offer but wanted the money!
