Kickers and knockers
Helen was talking about her Arkansas treasures she stole from us and mention "Kickers" something she said we put on the cow to stop her from kicking.
Sister they are called Hobbles. The cow kicks so we put hobbles on her to stop her kicking us or the pail of milk. I have had a full pail of milk dumped on my head in January more than once. This is a rare experience. first you are warm and then you are freezing to death and no school that day.
When I was a girl I went to school every day smelling like cow no one said a word, they smell like other farm animals except Joy Shipman who trapped animals for their hides and one day he smell like skunk . Nothing cleans out a head cold faster than the smell of skunk in a well heated school room.

When we got the new barn, I remember Dad having a short rope and tying the foot next to the milker to keep the cow from kicking.
I hated having to milk and I never wish to do it again.
We had a cow when I was young but I have never seen those kickers before. Guess the one we had did not kick!
What a hoot! Thankfully no-one has been daft enough to bottle that smell as a cold cure - although I wouldn't be surprised! I've only ever milked a goat and they only kick when they've just kidded so I was lucky! t.x
