Fred Hale tells the story about his Aunt going to Springfield, Mo. for salt during the civil war. Her name was Rachel Skaggs or Staggs. Salt was rare. They dug the dirt in the smoke house and boiled it to get salt. Rachel had only seen houses with fire places and on the way to Springfield she saw a house with a wood stove it had a stove pipe sticking out of the house. Rachel thought it was a cannon. Springfield was a long way from near Oak Grove to go for salt.
