lettuce and onions

We are having onions and lettuce for dinner when I was a girl it was my job to go get a dish pan full of lettuce and onions for mama to serve for dinner. I had to wash the lettuce not a fun job because water was always scarce at our home usually I had to make a trip to the spring for water but the part I hated most was trying to get the grass out of the lettuce.
My lettuce is full of grass this year because I dug the bed and it was full of grass. I was thought about getting the grass out as I cleaned my lettuce and onions today. I thought I have plenty of water even if I have lots of grass in this pan.
The corn bread is in the oven and The lettuce is clean just waiting for the bacon grease and vinegar. I had to gather the lettuce in the rain and that is why I had so much grass in the pan usually I sort it as I gather the leaves. I take a pair of scissors and cut the lettuce off so that it will grow again another day.The winter onions are putting out seed as you can see.
