a slave named York

I watched the second half of the Lewis and Clark Corp of discovery. The second half was better the  first half..
The best story they told I thought was that Clark took his slave York with him and when they made it back and everyone received their wages and other gifts York ask Clark where was his reward and ask why not give me my freedom.
Clark refused on the grounds that he was used to York and would miss him.. Clark wrote a friend that York had become so surly Clark had to beat him but I guess York didn't change his surly mood because after 5 years   Clark gave him his freedom!
