Arkansas prison population research

Black Percentage
Ratio of State Residents Black Percentage
of Incarcerated Population Ratio
population % black % of blacks in prison
Arkansas 15.7% 43.91%

Why with only 15.7% of arkansas population being black why is the prison population 43.91% black .

I once went to the prison site...and looked at some of the faces from my county. I knew about
half of them...and could have predicted they would end up where they were....when they were in the 6th grade!

Patsy, you ask a very important question about race and incarceration. It seems to me that everyone should think about this question carefully and should look at the facts behind every arrest and then every conviction. Too many people don't look at the facts - they stop at their opinion which often is based on myth, guess or bias.

And the facts are, as Patsy stated, there is something terribly wrong with a society when black people make up 15% of the total free population and 43% of the non-free population. Think about it all you want, but thinking about it will not change even one confined Black Arkansan into a man of freedom.

Think about this. All things being equal, if a African county where white people made up 15% of the population had a prison popluation that was 43% white people would we suspect all things were not equal?

Maybe this sounds really stupid but I think there are a good many of those that probably aren't even from your state. They get shiped out everywhere after conviction. Jim Baker was in the prison here in the county I live in. We get a lot of inmates in the hospital & they are from all over the country.
