Grandma Powell grew Hollyhocks
Grandma grew petunias in the spring, she grew hollyhocks, four O'clock and Zinnias in her garden all summer.
When she washed dishes or did her washing she always carried the water and poured on her flowers.
Their water system was a cistern and during the dry months water was in short supply. She always keep tubs under the drip of the roof to catch rain water for house hold needs.
One time when Aunt Betty still lived at home and before daddy went to war I was playing on my grand parent's back porch and aunt Betty's cat had kittens in a box on the porch.
grandma's rain tub was there and I took the kittens and was baptising them. I held them under to long and drown them all before aunt Betty arrived on the scene. Needless to say Aunt Betty was upset!
The Powell family came from a long line of Baptist and I was following a family tradition.

They are pretty. What was the flower Gram=ndma had by her front post When she lived in Green forest? As you faced the house it was the post to the right of her steps.
Grandma had gernariums in pots and the brought them in the house in the winter. I liked to go behind the old couch and dig through her stuff...nosey me. I have the Bible that I thumbed through often in my closet today for safe keeping. Grandma Renfroe love the hollyhocks too. Mom like 4 oclocks because they were easy to grow I think. thanks for the memory.
