A Searcy County man says a ranger with the National Park Service shot and killed one of his beagles when it strayed inside the boundaries of the Buffalo National River last month.Kevin Manes said a park ranger turned on his blue lights as Manes and Garan McDaniel drove inside the park for a third time looking for a 10-inch tall beagle named Peewee.
Manes said the ranger asked if he was looking for a dog, and when he replied yes, the ranger said, “I just shot your dog and have your collars here (obedience and name plate collar).”When Manes asked why the ranger shot his dog, he said the officer replied, “It had deer hemmed up and running them in circles. I love dogs but can’t stand to see a dog harass deer.”Manes said the ranger said he wouldn’t write him a ticket but asked to see his license.Middle Buffalo District Ranger Kevin Moses said in an e-mail Wednesday, Feb. 24, that federal misdemeanor laws enforced on park lands are listed under Title 36, Code of Federal Regulations (36 CFR).
He said 36 CFR Section 2.15 (5)(c) states: “Pets or feral animals that are running-at-large and observed by an authorized person in the act of killing, injuring or molesting humans, livestock, or wildlife may be destroyed if necessary for public safety or protection of wildlife, livestock, or other park resources.”He added that the National Park Service’s laws governing actions of commissioned law enforcement rangers dealing with “Destruction of Animals By Commissioned Personnel” states: “Pets or feral animals killing, injuring, or molesting humans, livestock, or other wildlife may be destroyed.”Manes said he, Mike Grinder and Garan McDaniel had turned loose beagles owned by Grinder and Manes in the Tomahawk area about 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23. By 11:30 a.m., they had caught all of Grinder’s beagles and all but one of Manes’ beagles. They heard a dog barking in the distance and decided to drive around until they found the dog. Manes said he and McDaniel made three trips to the North Maumee landing to look for the beagle, and they were stopped by the ranger on the third trip.Sunday morning, Manes said he and McDaniel drove to Buffalo Point to locate his dead beagle. The ranger eventually called and asked why he wanted to know where the dead dog was located.“I told him it was a family pet and we want it so we can bury it and not lay out there for the wild animals to eat,” Manes said.Manes said he followed the ranger’s directions and found the dog where it had been thrown in a briar patch.Manes said it is legal to run beagles on the Buffalo National River during rabbit season, except during deer rifle season. He said Jan. 23 was open rabbit season and it was not on park land illegally. He said a spokesman at the park service’s office in Harrison told him Monday, Jan. 25, that it was a law for them to kill a domesticated animal on park land if it’s harassing or endangering the life of any wildlife.“I am still trying to be convinced that a 10-inch beagle would be endangering a deer, because when I found my dead dog, there were no fences or anything else that would have hemmed the deer up and caused it to not be able to get away from a beagle.“So to tell me that you were justified in killing my dog because it had a deer hemmed up is not making sense to me.”By press time Wednesday night, Feb. 24, the Park Service had not returned a phone call seeking input on its actions.

were you there, sister?

PHOENIX - With a sheriff's helicopter beating overhead, the man known as "Sheriff Joe" stood behind a line of officers as 10,000 people marched past — but this was not the usual show of affection and support for Joe Arpaio.
"Joe must go! Joe must go," whole families chanted, as they rounded the corner in front of the county jail complex run by the five-term Maricopa County sheriff famed for his confrontational tactics, his harsh jail policies and a gift for publicity. The parade of mostly brown-skinned people wanted to show they hated his trademark immigration patrols
The little grey bantie
I have only one full bantam, she raised 9 chicks for me last year. i think she is 3 years old in April. Clayton hatched her and 89 more chicks for me and she is the only one left of the lot. The rooster in my pen was her hatch also.
I am doing fairly well this morning with out pain. The sun is shining here it is quite since is Sunday and all the party people are sleeping in.
I looked and my post on April 30, 2007 I said brother said the eggs were hatching so the hen will be 3 last of April.

today
it was cool and crisp as I went to feed the hens this morn. They laid 13 eggs yesterday that is pretty good for 15 hens.
Tony has a birthday today. I saw his daughters mother-in-law in town yesterday and she said the kids were home. I guess they came for cake.
I am some what better. I may live yet but I thought for a week I was on my way out. it is scary to change a Bandage and see all your food you have eat pour out on the floor. I guess it had backed up in there for a week and what I was seeing was all that crap come out at once but I was afraid for a few days that my gut had busted wide open.
The neighbor boy borrowed my garden rake yesterday , I don't like to loan them any thing because in the past they never returned what ever they took so I said they could use it but to bring it back. When I went to feed this morning no rake so I went out on the back porch and yelled until the boy came to the door. I got him out of bed. I made him go get the rake and bring it to me. Told you I was feeling better!
John Ewards the sinner
Betty has been reading the tell all book about John Edwards and she is appalled but I think pick any politician and write the truth about their lives and we would all be sickened by the book.
truth be told that is the case of most people whether they are in politics or just your johnny come lately or Joe six pack.
We had a field day With Sarah Palin and her life but I think that is because she isn't smart enough to hide the truth from us. It is possible that Sarah Palin may be one of the best we had in the field last year at least we probably know most of her faults.
I have thought about why this is the truth and I have decided if a man gains all he needs in food, shelter and other necessities he begins to cast his eye about for something to occupy his time since man has a sinful nature he turns to sin. The more time he has the greater the sins.
God said man should earn his living by sweat and when he stops sweating he gets into trouble.

4 roosters

Bantam chickens are a joy and here is a photo I found on the web. 4 roosters and two hens the hen have a lot of attention in this coop.
22 degrees again but the sun is shining and I am not in pain so all is well in my world. Sister is sending me a package I got a email that said so maybe it will be money, do you think?

another day here
11 eggs yesterday. It is cool here about 22 I think. I put the hen's corn on top of what is left of the hay bale to make them scratch for their food.
I am not well at all, when I eat anything I get gas and I am wondering if my bowel is almost completely blocked. Time will tell I guess. When I say gas I mean I swell up and it hurts something fierce.

12 eggs
22 degrees here and the sun is shining. I am not in any pain for which I am grateful.I went to feed and now I am going to bed and read. I am getting 12 eggs a day from my 12 hens. The 2 half banties lay a egg every once in a while and the bantie hen has went on strike she tried to set and I wouldn't let her so I guess she has just decided to strike.

Jerry Seinfelt

ST. LOUIS — Some say they have heard him shriek at the morning sun. Some claim to have glimpsed his feathered form strutting through the neighborhood's dark alleys. Some think he's pure fiction, Soulard's own, though significantly smaller, Yeti or Loch Ness monster he maybe.
But seen or heard, illusion or myth, one thing is clear: The rooster known as Jerry Seinfeld is an outlaw. Thanks to one city resident who couldn't take the crowing any more, Jerry and his fellow cockerels were banned from the city last fall."If you've ever lived next to a rooster, you'll get what I'm going to say," said Warren Dow, whose complaint ultimately led to the ban. "It's just the most continuous, piercing thing I've heard in six years of city living.
But it's a sound that more city dwellers are starting to hear. The rising number of urban homesteaders and backyard "chickeners" is forcing communities to deal with the unintended downside accompanying the growing trend. Sometimes that means a Jerry. Sometimes an irresponsible owner who let coop maintenance slide. Sometimes just figuring out what the law allows and where."A lot of these city councils get kind of blindsided. They realize: 'Oh my gosh. People have chickens, and we have to do something about it,'" said Andy Schneider, aka "The Chicken Whisperer," who hosts an increasingly popular backyard-chicken-centric radio show in Atlanta. "They're not up on it."As more city folks launch into chicken ownership, some are starting to question whether backyard chickens are such a good idea. More urban dwellers are complaining — St. Louis logged 40 complaints about chickens last year. One animal rights group is calling for cities to ban, not just roosters, but chickens altogether. Some city dwellers simply believe that urban environments should stay that way."I like the concept of people being close to the earth and growing their own food," Dow said. "But there's a good reason that farms and cities are separate."Some municipalities allow chickens up to a point. St. Louis, for example, limits the number of domestic animals, including chickens, at four. Others, like Ballwin, don't allow chickens at all, though at least one resident is pushing to change that."The more progressive cities are starting to allow them," said Robert Lughai, co-director of "Mad City Chickens," a 2009 documentary about the backyard chicken movement. Some people, however, are questioning whether cities should give chickeners the green light. A consortium of animal sanctuaries banded together late last year, calling on cities to "not allow backyard flocks and exhorting those that are already zoned for this practice to establish and enforce strict regulations."The group's members says the trend is producing thousands of unwanted birds."It's such a fad," said Susie Coston, of the New York-based group Farm Sanctuary, which rescues farm animals and advocates a vegan diet. "People have great intentions. They think they're not supporting industrial farming, and that's good. But I don't think they're being realistic."Coston worries people will neglect hens when they stop producing. But, more importantly, she's concerned about the boys. When aspiring owners decide to launch into the hobby, they usually buy chicks, hoping they will grow into hens that lay eggs. But despite hatcheries' efforts to provide females, the "sexing" process isn't foolproof, and sometimes those chicks mature into roosters. That means a surplus of roosters — and nowhere to put them.Bill Thompson, a new chicken owner who lives in south St. Louis, bought four chicks, two of which turned out to be roosters. He gave them to his vet. When the Maplewood-Richmond Heights school district bought 14 chicks, six were roosters, which had to be placed at homes in the country."Every week we get calls (about) roosters," said Coston. "If I took every rooster we get called for, we'd have thousands."But backyard chickeners say, with responsible ownership, chickens don't bother anyone, and a surplus of roosters is a small price to pay for the benefits chickens provide — from fresh eggs to insect control. They also point to one surprising benefit: A study found that a hen can consume about 7 pounds of food scraps a month, or about 84 pounds a year. "If a city had 2,000 households with three hens or more each, that translates to 252 tons of biomass that's diverted from landfills," Schneider said. "They are really good composters."Chicken advocates also point out that the chickens are treated as pets, and when a hen's productive years are over, they are far from neglected. They're often doted on like a member of the family — one that can eat bugs and provide fertilizer. One website, chickendiapers.com sells "diapers" that enable chickens to roam around indoors without soiling carpets. The owner reports that sales have climbed by 20 or 30 percent for the past few years."A lot of people, surprisingly, have them for pets," said Lughai, who in his film explores the bond people have with their chickens. "They're like a dog or cat."Jerry Seinfeld, Soulard's elusive cockerel, however, is no pet. He's an enigma. No one knows where he came from, whether he has a home or whether he was an unwanted rooster turned loose."Jerry isn't owned by anyone," said Phyllis Young, the alderman who introduced the ordinance that turned Jerry into a criminal.Still, while he's no longer legal, Jerry will probably remain a renegade. And with the backyard chicken momentum showing no signs of slowing, he will likely have more company. "I don't think anyone's going to do anything about it," Young said. "It's not like we have a rooster ranger."
spring

I am some what better this morning. I had so much crap pour out of me in the evening time it amazes me that I could be still living. I would think that it would set up infection and send me on my way to the place that has streets of gold.
I love the spring time and perhaps I will see it this again year. The buds on this tree hold promise of spring.

Signs of the times.

Evan Bayh will not run for reelection, I never saw so many Democrats in the house and senate quiting.
The Teabaggers, I read this on the net somewhere and googled it, you ought to google it, seems there was a sling expression already in use that has nothing to do with taxes. no wonder they are having problems keeping people.
as if we, left wingers didn't have enough trouble being called such names as terrorist and welfare queens now they say that the whack job that shot all the people in Alabama was far left and was obsessed with Obama .
I see on the news that someone made the 4 year old remove his leg brace, which was not what caught my attention some people are referring to to Mis. Neapolitan as BIG SIS, I am not sure but I think they are slurring the lady since it is known she is a lesbian.
Now there is a " SMALL" business in Wisconsin that has put up a sign to impeach Obama, the sign has been paid in advance for 6 months, they are doing better than I am if they can afford to waste money in this manner.

reading on a snowy day
This is what I am reading today. this is a library book if you think your lot in life is hard read what these women experienced on the Oregon trail.
After the depression of 1837, the prospect of "free land" and gold prompted more than 250,000 people to emigrate to Oregon and California between 1840 and 1870. History, relying predominantly on men's writings, often presents this journey in terms of mythic adventure. But what was it like for women? After studying the writings of 103 women, Lillian Schlissel determined that "If ever there was a time when men and women turned their psychic energies toward opposite visions, the overland journey was that time." In Women's Diaries of the Westward Journey, she explores her findings, quoting at length from her sources and including a selection of diaries and reminiscences at the end. Although unmarried adolescents were often exuberant about their experience, for the married women, particularly those with young children, the trip was fraught with danger and fear. Children could fall under wagon wheels or be left behind in the confusion of traveling with as many as one hundred other wagons. There were buffalo stampedes, Indian attacks, snakebites, dysentery, starvation, and cholera - many women note individual graves, sometimes one per mile. In addition, one of every five women was pregnant when the journey began or became so in the course of a trip that guidebooks said would take three to four months, but often took six to eight. Through Lillian Schlissel's fascinating and extremely readable account, we gain a fuller understanding of the journey few of these women wanted to take

work
This is what work Bill Clinton does, now I ask you is this work or play? Brutal work schedule? compare this to the average factory worker, the dairy farmer or any other work done by the workers in this country.
I really enjoy listening to Bill Clinton but the truth be told he hasn't done a lick of work in 50 years neither has the rest of the political leaders in this country. Blowing hot air is not work.
Aides said Clinton's second heart procedure in five years seemed unlikely to slow down his brutal work schedule, which included two trips to Haiti, stumping for Senate candidate Martha Coakley and attending an economic summit in Switzerland — all in just over a month."He's working as hard as he's ever worked. He's done it for 63 years and will do it for the next 63 years. He's never going to stop," said Paul Begala, a Democratic strategist who helped guide Clinton's first presidential bid in 1992.Aides said Clinton's second heart procedure in five years seemed unlikely to slow down his brutal work schedule, which included two trips to Haiti, stumping for Senate candidate Martha Coakley and attending an economic summit in Switzerland — all in just over a month.

snow removeable

this is how they cleared the Washington DC streets of snow in the good ole days before the Negros found they had the right to a pay check.
DC was shut down Monday and Tuesday because DC had the workers to clear the streets but no money for salt so the Obama group wanted to bail DC out and give them money for salt to which the republican group screamed no way so workers sat and the streets were not plowed. for once I agree with the republicans, the snow will melt by May and the fools in the government are not going to do anything so let the government be shut down until the snow melts.
good job if you can get it
this is a story about the city of green forest and their hiring policy. I had noticed all winter that my water bill was holding steady at $36 every month which was what it was running last summer. I use more water in the summer so I knew something was not kosher and this month my bill was $16.
Seems that the fellow who has been our meter reader for years got a DWI and lost his job. Then along came this lady, a girl friend of some gentleman on the city council. She needed a job and they hired her. The gentleman began to try to get her a raise in pay right from the get go. Then it came to the attention of certain people that the lady wasn't reading some of the meters she was estimated the bill, this worked so well she started estimated every month and didn't read any meters.
That was when her trouble started seems there is a man related to our family that raises turkeys on several different farms since with the cut backs in the economy Mr. Powell didn't put turkeys on a certain farm. Low and behold here comes his water bill $5ooo dollars for a month! that was his average for several months so the meter reader had just keep up the reading at that average.needless to say Mr. Powell squealed like a stuck hog and Mrs Meter reader was called to account for the problem. She still has her job but may see hard times ahead.
The city has to go around to some of the meters and adjust them, seems some of the reading were higher than the meter would go.

snowed again
coming to you from the land of ice and snow, snow fell all Day yesterday and up into the night if it had all stuck we would not see the melting until April but as it didn't stick for most of the day we have a slight covering this morning with the temperature hovering around 11 degrees.
I carried water and feed to the chickens who were all singing like they had good sense. They were saying spring is coming and I replied are you sure?
We have heat and food and tomorrow is pay day so life is OK but I wish the snow would go away.

Worthy POWELL
Worthy died at a young age, the family story was they had a blizzard and Grace was having a baby, Worthy went out in the storm to get a doctor for his wife and came down with pneumonia and died.
Worthy was a family foke hero and I heard many stories about him.
His nature was jolly and he enjoyed making people laugh. Grandma Powell told me this one.
There was a holly roller brush arbor revival and the Powell sons went to see what it was all about. The next morning Melton and Jess told of what they had seen and how people had carried on then Worthy said I tell you when a woman falls down on the floor and kicks her heels over her head you have seen it all.
Worth was on a train and he was pushed or fell off and suffered many injuries, Grandpa Richard made several trips from Carrollton to Springfield Mo. in a buggy to bring a doctor for Worthy after months of pain and suffering Worthy recovered but was always cripple in the one leg. My mother told me the rumor in the family was that Worthy was in a dispute with some ruff fellows and they pushed him off the train trying to kill him.
After Worthy recovered he was addicted to morphine because they gave it to him for pain. My grandfather Melton had the family lock him and Worthy in a room for days until Worth got over his addiction. Grandpa was in the room to stop Worthy from hurting himself . I suppose it was a terrible time for the family.
I have always wondered if Worthy was back on the morphine while he was living in Kansas and that may have been the cause of his death.
Fleta said to me once how hard it must of been for Richard Powell to make the many trips to get the doctor, the last trip he left his buggy and team as payment. I said from what we had heard about grandma Betty it probably was easier than staying home with her.
Aunt Thelma said the reason Melton and Jess were teachers grandma Betty had encouraged them so they could support the family.grandpa was 30 years old before he married and the reason was he supported his brothers and sisters. I remember when grandpa's sisters visited him they showed him great respect and love.

today

snow for tonight and tomorrow is the forecaste.
I saw the tea baggier had a meeting and Sarah Palin was their star, I listens for a few moments and here she was telling how they managed to give the state of Alaska back to the people in 2 1/2 short years and if we would elect her she would do the same for the U S of A.
Every thing would just be hunky Dorey if she was in charge we would be all have jobs we loved and we would all be eating high on the hog.
I saw while cruising the net that some think she had crimp notes on her hand instead a teleprompter like Obama used.
I also saw some fellow, I have forgot his name, wanted to go back to the "can you read" test of the old south for voters and if we had that we wouldn't have elected Obama as president.
I am not a tea drinker. I drink coffee.

asking winnie jo
Fleta said and she has said this before, I think and I want Winnie Jo to wade in on this, I think if grandma wrote this in a letter for a record for us to have, I think she was right . I knew grandma far better than Fleta did and I am sure she knew what she said.
Grandma Powell was not given to speak without thought and she certainly would not have wrote something down that she wasn't sure of I say.
Our Grandmother in a letter date 1967 states that brothers Ben (her grandfather), Andrew (Andy) and Taylor (Pat) Coxsey came to Carroll Co. AR in 1869 and that Ben was the oldest. I am almost sure that that is not correct. I found Ben Coxey on the 1850 census as a son of Absalom Coxsey. On the same census, Polk Co., Tennessee, John B. Coxsey is listed with sons James A., John T., and Joshua L. The James A. is James Anderson, Aunt Una's grandfather. Joshua L, is I think, actually Joshua Taylor and is the Pat Coxsey. What I think is that Ben Coxsey was a brother to Andy and Pat's father, John B. Coxsey. But I am not sure. I am pretty sure that Ben, Andy and Pat were not brothers. However, Ben was closer to the age of Andy and Pat than he was to their father John B. Coxsey.

Top This One For A Speeding Ticket
Two Highway Patrol Officers were conducting speeding enforcement on I-15, just north of Oceanside, San Diego, California.
One of the officers was using a hand held radar device to check speeding vehicles approaching the crest of a hill. The officers were suddenly surprised when the radar gun began reading 300 miles per hour and climbing.
The officer attempted to reset the radar gun, but it would not reset and then it suddenly turned off.
Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact locked on to a USMC F/A-18 Hornet which was engaged in a low flying exercise near this, it's home base location.
Back at the California Highway Patrol Headquarters the Patrol Captain fired off a complaint to the US Marine Corps. Base Commander for shutting down his equipment.
The reply came back in true USMC style:
Thank you for your letter.
You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Hornet had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked on to, your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it, which is why it shut down.
Furthermore, an Air-to-Ground missile aboard the fully armed aircraft had also automatically locked onto your equipment location. Fortunately, the Marine Pilot flying the Hornet recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile system alert status and was able to override the automated defense system before the missile was launched to destroy the hostile radar position.
The pilot suggests you cover your mouths when cussing at them, since the video systems on these jets are very high tech.. Sergeant Johnson, the officer holding the radar gun, should get his dentist to check his left rear molar. It appears the filling is loose. Also, the snap is broken on his holster.'

Also, the snap is broken on his holster.'

storms

Winnie Jo should be recovering from surgery about now. We can be happy that the big snow storm didn't hit here. I see on the net where the mid Atlantic states are getting a big snow Storm and many have lost their power. as for us we have mud! I looked out yesterday afternoon and the snow was falling so fast here you couldn't see any thing except snow luckily it only fell for 15 minutes like that.
I need to go throw hay in the chicken pen, it is a mud hole. The plan I had of getting rid of some of the chickens has feel thorough. My finical advisor has said the weather is not good enough at this time to sell chickens.
I have heard that my niece Julie Powell will be checking out our blogs. welcome!

itch
define the word itch.. to itch is to want to scratch... this is what the dictionary says..
I have had this problem for a solid month. I went to a doctor and he said he thought it was my soap causing the problem, I knew it wasn't the soap but you can never tell a doctor any thing. He prescribed these pills that cost me 13 dollars 27 pills each pill was the size of a small pin head. he also prescribed this tube of ointment, 27 dollars and the size was 1 ounce.
for those of you who don't know me I am and have always been a very large woman and I have this itch on both feet and legs, my hips and from one shoulder to the other.
The doctor also told me don't scratch good advise if you can get it or do it.
so now I have small sores that itch on my back and shoulders, the rash on my legs is gone but the other before mention parts of my body still itch.
The ointment and the pills are just a memory and I am now using over the counter hydrocortisone cream and some bootleg pills from a family member who suffered the same problem last summer.
I made 2 trips to the doctor and on the second trip he said keep using the cream, sure if I had any left which I didn't, he offered to write me a new order for it but who in the hell has 27 dollars left to buy more salve and in the mean time I itch and try not to scratch.
modern medicine is a marvel. don't scratch.
